Grosjean Battles for Spot in Final
Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean came back from a set and 4-1 down before booking
a place in the final of the Stella Artois Championships for the second
consecutive year with a 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over Korean qualifier
Hyung-Taik Lee.
Grosjean, the No. 5 seed who won the grass court title in Nottingham four
years ago, is through to his first ATP final since Tokyo last year. He will
be attempting to claim his fourth career final from his 11th final.
Lee was attempting to become the first qualifier to reach The Queen's Club
final since Laurence Tieleman in 1998.
The Korean, who was appearing in his first ATP semifinal since claiming his
maiden title as a qualifier in Sydney in January 2003, came back from a break
down in the opening set to take it in the tie-break. It was the first set
Grosjean had dropped in the tournament, and he soon found himself two breaks
of serve down at 4-1 in the second.
Lee, the 28-year-old Seoul resident seemed destined to reach his third career
final, but Grosjean hit back to take the next five games. Although Lee saved
a set point with an ace at 5-6, he could nothing to stop the Frenchman in the
second tie-break, as Grosjean levelled the match by taking it 7-3.
Brimming with confidence, Grosjean dominated the final set and opened up a
4-0 lead, and there was no way back for Lee as the Frenchman booked his place
in the final in 2 hours, 18 minutes.
"At 4-1 down in the second, I tried to play the points and not give up," said
Grosjean. "On grass, it can turn around so fast. I knew he was playing so
well, but I tried not to have any fear and continue to attack the short
balls. I didn't want to give him the match, so I kept fighting."
"Being in the final is great for me. Either [Roddick or Hewitt] will be tough
but it's great to play players like them before Wimbledon. They both have
their names on the trophy here, so I want to add mine."
