Historic All Teenage Final At DFS Classic
12th June 2004 -Colin Banks
History will be made at the DFS Classic in Edgbaston on Sunday as the two
teenage sensations of the WTA Tour made it through to a historic final.
Third seed Maria Sharapova continued her march towards the DFS Classic title
after a hard-fought three set win over 2nd seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland
6-1,6-7,6-3.
In the final she will play fellow teen sensation Tatiana Golovin after she
overcame her compatriot and 9th seed Emelie Loit in an all-French battle
6-3, 5-7,7-5. The final will be the third youngest final in the open era
with Sharapova only 17 years and 1 month old and Golovin a mere 16 years
and 4 months*.
The French battle had all the ingredients to make it one of the most
compelling matches in the 23 year history of the DFS Classic. Stunning
tennis of the highest quality was the order of the day, but the match will
be most remembered for a series of questionable line calls which led Loit
to blow up at the Chair Umpire on more than one occasion and verbally attack
Golovin after she requested a bathroom break when trailing 0-2 in the final
set.
“It’s not fair,” blasted Loit. “Why can she not take a break during the
changeover but when we are playing the game. She said it was an emergency,
but I really don’t know.”
Loit was furious with umpire Jamie Crowson after several overrules went
against her early in the second set, but it only fuelled her commitment
as she battled back to force a decider where the tennis and drama reached
a new level. In the end it was the continued aggression of Golovin that was
the key as she reached her first tour final.
“I’m excited to be in the final tomorrow,” exclaimed Golovin. “It was
so tough out there, but a very good match. It’s hard to play someone you
know as we have practised and played Fed Cup together.”
The final marks a year of outstanding progress for the two teenagers who
trained together as Juniors under the guidance of Nick Bollettieri. Sharapova
has risen from 125 to 15 in the rankings over the last 12 months and Golovin
from 315 to 71. Golovin has already broken into the top 50 by reaching the
final and will jump to around 44 if she wins the title.
“When we were little we used to talk together about being the best when we
were training at Nick’s.” said Golovin. “I used to always lose our matches
6-0,6-0, but we will see what happens tomorrow.”
* The two previous youngest finals in the Open era were 1991 San Diego with
Monica Seles (17 years and 8 months) and Jennifer Capriati (15 years and 4
months) and 1980 Tampa with Tracy Austin (17 years and 11 months) and Andrea
Jaeger (15 years and 5 months).
Tomorrow’s final of the DFS Classic begins at 2pm.
