Mauresmo Named Official Ambassador of Habitat for Humanity
PARIS – Today Whirlpool announced that Amelie Mauresmo was named official
ambassador of Habitat for Humanity, the WTA Tour’s and Whirlpool Europe’s
joint social cause, at a brief ceremony on the roof terrace of The Hyatt
Regency Hotel in Paris. Habitat For Humanity is an international charity
dedicated to eliminating poverty housing, with a passion for supporting
women as central figures in society and the family. The three organizations
are equally dedicated global leaders in their respective fields. Habitat for
Humanity was thus a natural choice for both Whirlpool and the WTA Tour.
In her role as ambassador for Habitat for Humanity, Mauresmo will support the
charity's cause, appear at social occasions, build on site and be directly
involved in partnering with families in need. In Paris, Habitat for Humanity
presented the celebrity player with a Habitat for Humanity tool-belt, hammer
and commemorative plaque, as a symbolic gesture to mark her appointment as an
official ambassador.
Mauresmo, ranked World No. 4, said "The Whirlpool brand and women's tennis
have a lot in common: they're both modern, exciting and dynamic. These are
qualities that make me proud to be associated with this partnership. I am
here today to show my own support and that of the other players, to the
charitable work of Habitat for Humanity. I am very happy to be able to
contribute to this cause. Everyone deserves to have a home, a roof over
their heads, so I'm looking forward to lending a practical hand "on-site"
in the building of one of these houses. Thanks to everyone for what you do."
The premier sponsorship of the WTA Tour by Whirlpool Europe, brings together
two top global brands that are household names for performance, leadership
and passion, and also sees Whirlpool Europe as the presenting sponsor of
Habitat for Humanity as the WTA Tour’s official social cause.
The partnership between Whirlpool Europe and Habitat for Humanity in Europe,
with the support of the WTA Tour, began this year. It follows a
long-established relationship between the Whirlpool Corporation and Habitat
for Humanity on a global level, which has resulted in more than $25 million
in service and support donations since 1999. Whirlpool Europe, in the first
year alone, will donate 600 Whirlpool brand home appliances for the
construction program across Europe. The homes, which will be sold to
people in need at no profit, through no-interest loans, will each include
Whirlpool appliances.
“The personal involvement of a tennis star like Amelie as our new ambassador,
added to Whirlpool’s contribution to our program and the support of the WTA
Tour represents another important step forward in our global efforts to help
eliminate poverty housing worldwide,” said Don Haszczyn, Vice-President for
Habitat for Humanity, Europe and Central Asia. “Their commitment to our
cause will enable us to inform more people in Europe about the unacceptable
conditions in which millions of families are forced to live around the world.
It will help us tell more people about our work internationally and to enlist
their help to break the cycle of poverty caused by not having a simple,
decent place to live and grow.”
