Coria Continues Grass Court Roll, Faces Llodra in the Final
Top-seeded Guillermo Coria spent three hours and 30 minutes on court Saturday
to advance to his career first grass court final. The 22-year-old Argentinean
opened up the day with a 6-2, 7-5 quarterfinal win against Arnaud Clement,
the finalist from the last two editions of the Ordina Open. Coria followed up
his vicory against the Frenchman with another strong performance in the
semifinals, defeating Mario Ancic 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-3.
The strong-serving Croatian took the early initiative and held six set points
in the first set but wasn't able to convert. Despite not being able to take
his chances in the first set, Ancic quickly regained composure and won seven
of the next eight games to level the match at one set all, and to go 1-0 up
in the third. Coria though, proved to be the stronger as he broke the
Croatian's serve twice in the third set to seal victory after one hour and
57 minutes.
Earlier in the day, in the second remaining quarterfinal, Ancic ended local
favorite Martin Verkerk's hopes by defeating the Dutchman 6-3, 6-3 in one
hour and nine minutes.
Wild card Michael Llodra booked his spot in his second career final by
defeating Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-2 in only 51 minutes. The Frenchman broke
Robredo's serve three times in the match, while he didn't lose his own
serve in the encounter. Robredo was appearing in his third quarterfinal
at the Ordina Open and was aiming for his first final appearance.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Coria: "To be in a grass court final is something fantastic for me, I'd never
expected this. To have a title on grass would add something to my career."
"The two matches today were totally different from each other. Against
Clement it was more of a baseline game, and against Ancic I had to focus
on his serve. I think the key today was my own serve."
Llodra: "I'm very happy, it's my second final of the year. It's going to be
pretty tough to win this tournament. I'm playing the winner of Coria and
Ancic so it will be very tough but I will fight to win my first title."
"Today I was playing good, I'm in good shape mentally and physically. I think
he [Robredo] didn't play any matches against serve and volley players, he
played only three matches on grass."
"It's my second final, I have to be more aggressive than in my first one,
especially in the first set."
