Llodra Defeats Coria to Claim First ATP Singles Title
Wild card Michael Llodra won his first ATP title after defeating No. 1 seeded
wild card Guillermo Coria 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and two minutes at the Ordina
Open.
Coria took the early lead in the final, breaking Llodra’s serve in the third
game. The Frenchman quickly regained composure winning six out of the seven
next games, going 6-3 and 2-0 up. Coria though broke back to level terms in
the second set, but at 4-4 the Frenchman managed another break of serve. He
then served out the match with a flawless service game to love, containing
two aces, the last being on his first match point.
The 24-year-old Frenchman was appearing in his second career final, having
lost to Dominik Hrbaty in the final in Adelaide in January.
On his way to the final Llodra defeated Yen-Hsun Lu, Jan Vacek, Raemon
Sluiter and No. 4 seed Tommy Robredo.
Llodra collects 35 INDESIT ATP 2004 Race points and €51,400, while the Coria
is awarded 24 INDESIT ATP 2004 Race Points and €30,230.
Coria came into ‘s-Hertogenbosch having never won a grass court match. The
22-year-old Argentine was aiming for his ninth career title in his 16th
final. He had already won two titles in 2004 (Buenos Aires and the ATP
Masters Monte-Carlo) and was trying to become the first Argentine winner
at the Ordina Open.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Llodra: “I’m very happy to win my first title. When you play tennis you
play to win tournaments and today it’s done, so it’s good!”
“I tried to do my best match by match. I tried to focus on my serve and
volley. I tried to raise my game for every match and today was a good final
so I’m very happy. I have a lot of confidence after winning my first title.
I will try to win some matches in Wimbledon and afterwards I will have some
rest to enjoy my victory.”
“I lost the final in Adelaide and after the final I said ‘Come on, I know I
can be better’. In the final there I was a little bit tight, my muscles were
a bit tight, but today I was physically perfect. I was very confident today
before the final.”
“I’m not surprised, finally I won a title! This year I have made a lot of
good results. To make the fourth round of Roland Garros helped me a lot,
it’s a new start for me.”
“I don’t have too many good memories from last year, I lost my Mum so it
was very tough for me to play last year. This year I’m trying to do my best
in practice and in matches and I think it’s great for me to win my first
title today.”
Coria: “It was a very tough match, Llodra was playing very well. I think I
played a good match, I was trying to be aggressive. I felt a little bit
tired, my legs were a little bit heavy.”
“I wanted to win badly. It would have been great to have won another title,
especially on grass. I felt really comfortable on the grass court this week.
I really enjoyed it and I hope I will continue to enjoy it next week. This
week will give me unbelievable confidence for next week.”
“I had a fantastic week beating great grass court players such as Clement
and Antic. It was much more than I had expected and could have dreamed
about.”
