Mauresmo Moves Closer
Mauresmo Moves Closer
Friday, June 25, 2004
Amelie Mauresmo, France's big hope for the Wimbledon title, moved into the
third round on Court No.2 with a straight-sets victory over Jennifer Hopkins,
the 23-year-old American qualifier.
It was their first meeting and Mauresmo won 6-3, 6-3 in 69 minutes. The
victory margin might have been wider if Hopkins had not made such a
determined effort to scrap for points, especially in the second set.
Hopkins was making her fourth appearance in the main draw at Wimbledon and had
equalled her best performance by reaching the second round for a second time.
But the 149th ranked player did not make much impression on Mauresmo's strong
and well organised game in the first set which the French woman took with a
decisive forehand, wide to Hopkins' backhand.
After Mauresmo had established a lead of 2-1 in the second set and had three
break points to take the Hopkins serve for 3-1, there was more resistance on
the American side of the net. Hopkins played her way out of trouble to win
the game. She profited by charging the net and making some decisive volleys
either to beat or give Mauresmo something extra to think about.
A similar situation occurred with Mauresmo leading at 3-2 and Hopkins again
saved three break points with bold tactics. But two games later Mauresmo
forced a key break to love for 5-3 and then served another love game for
victory.
Mauresmo missed Wimbledon last year because of her rib muscle injury but has
settled into the routines well this time, her fifth attempt to win the title.
Two straight-sets wins have taken her into the third round and her confidence
was obvious today.
