Grosjean Hustles Home Monday, June 28, 2004 Sebastien Grosjean of France advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Court 2 with a straight sets victory over the 27th seeded Robbie Ginepri, 21, of the USA. Grosjean, a semi-finalist last year and playing in The Championships for the sixth time, won 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) against the man who had defeated 6th seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in the third round. Against 10th seed Grosjean, Ginepri was on the back foot for lengthy periods but made a spirited revival in the third set. At 5-3 Ginepri had five set points but one by one Grosjean fought them off and then broke serve. Ginepri never worried Grosjean again in the remaining three games and the finishing tiebreak. Grosjean maintained his record at this Wimbledon of not losing a set. He is now well positioned to repeat a semi-final place as he faces an unseeded player in the last eight. Grosjean was soon in command against Ginepri, whom he had beaten twice before, most recently in the Australian Open this year when he won in four sets on the way to the last eight. The Frenchman broke early in both the first and second sets, as his court coverage and strength and accuracy of shot paid rich dividends. After falling behind 2-0 at the start of the third set, Ginepri rallied to take the next three games and play himself back into contention. At last Grosjean began to make errors and was broken again in the eighth game, when a double fault put him two break points down and he dropped serve on a missed forehand. Ginepri, serving for the set, went 15-40 as Grosjean put down a backhand winner. This was the prelude for a ferociously contested game, with Ginepri pressing hard for the set and Grosjean hanging on to survive five set points and then break back. Grosjean had two break points to lead 6-5 but Ginepri saved those with a service winner and then a forehand winner and went on to win the game with a net cord backhand. Grosjean set up the tiebreak with an ace and made the key shot in the decider with a forehand winner against service to lead 3-2. Grosjean won on his first match point, to complete a performance enhanced by 14 aces.
