Tatiana Golovin, the 16-year-old from France, came through a sudden death
finish against Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland to reach the fourth round
for the first time at Wimbledon today. She won 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and will now
play defending champion Serena Williams.
The match was suspended yesterday because of rain with Gagliardi serving at
deuce and 3-3 in the final set. It only needed 12 minutes of play today for
Golovin to win.
From the restart Gagliardi ran into trouble, losing her serve with two faults
in succession. First she put a forehand out and followed up with a second
forehand into the net to give the Moscow-born Golovin a critical break.
Golovin, who had played at Wimbledon previously in the junior competition,
served confidently to increase her lead to 5-3. She reached game point with
two service winners from 15-all and then served an ace to go to 5-3.
Now the pressure was on the 27-year-old Gagliardi but she began with a double
fault and a missed forehand. She won the next two points but a missed backhand
volley put her match point down and Golovin took the decisive point with a
smash.
Gagliardi had had attention to her neck from the trainer three times during
yesterday's first set. She was in her eighth Wimbledon championship but the
ambitious teenager opposite her proved a difficult opponent.
After the match, Golovin said: "I'm happy about my match today. It was
definately very tough considering we had to stop yesterday. It was tough
mentally but I got through it."
However, facing Serena will be only the second time Golovin has faced a
member of the world's top ten. Even so, the 16 year old looks comfortable
on the grass at SW19 and may prove a difficult opponent for the No. 1 seed.
"I'm already very excited to be in the fourth round," she said. "Playing
Serena ia going to be amazing. I'm just really excited."
