Mauresmo Grows in Confidence
Tuesday, June 29, 2004
The line from Rudyard Kipling’s poem 'If' is inscribed over the entrance to
Centre Court and reads: "If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat
those two impostors just the same".
In many ways, this could describe Amelie Mauresmo's attitude since the death
of her father, Francis, from cancer in March. And so far it is doing her no
harm. Today she reached the quarter-finals with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over
Silvia Farina Elia of Italy. She displayed a composure and self-confidence
that has grown with each performance over the past week at The Championships.
Mauresmo, possessing an outstanding all-court game and natural talent, has
been tipped as a player capable of winning Grand Slams since she turned
professional in 1997. However, she has developed the reputation as a player
who allows the big occasion to affect her and the nearest she has come to
fulfilling her potential was a solitary Australian Open final appearance
five years ago.
Mauresmo's perennial disappointments at the French Open have underlined the
point. But she started to develop her new-found balanced attitude in Paris
recently although it was not enough to stop her suffering her second
successive quarter-final defeat.
Yet her approach is becoming fully developed at this Wimbledon. She said: "I
now put things into perspective. I see things differently and think about my
priorities. Enjoying what I do now is the priority when it used to be,
sometimes, results and stuff.
"My father’s memory is an inspiration for my way of life now, not
specifically tennis, and I sometimes think of him, but not on court because
I’m trying to focus on my game."
The 24-year-old, who missed last year’s Wimbledon through injury after
making the last four in 2002, believes she is becoming more attuned to
grass.
She said: "I felt pretty good when I reached the semis and this year I feel
pretty good on it again. It is a good sensation to play on the surface. It
took me a few years to understand how to play on the surface but now I’m
feeling comfortable. I’m pretty happy about all my game although there are
some things I can improve. I’m feeling comfortable."
She faces Argentine Paola Suarez for the first time on grass and their
head-to-heads are tied at 2-2, with all their meetings on clay.
Mauresmo said: "She is playing well and has a lot of confidence as she also
reached the semi-finals of the French. She’s a clay court type player but
with the grass a little slow here she has been able to handle it well. It’s
going to be a tough one."

"I am more interested in playing good tennis than in the victory. It is
great to be here. The level of players is so high. It is great for me to
be practicing with such players and be playing against them in tournaments.
I can only benefit from this experience."----------------Richard Gasquet
