Mighty Monfils Through To Semis

Top seed Gael Monfils continued his charge to his first Wimbledon title by
seeing off the industrious American Brendan Evans in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
Monfils, who has already won the Boys' Singles crowns at the Australian Open
and Roland Garros this year, has stuttered rather than cruised through to the
semi-finals, often allowing his temper to get the better of him.
He is a peculiar player to watch. His focus often meanders from the court to
the fans, the umpire or the line judges. He queries line calls and
perpetually frowns, occasionally losing his rag and flinging his racquet onto
the grass when he scuffs a stroke.
But there's an irresistible flair and fluency about his play that means he
can outwit the likes of Brendan Evans with relative ease when he gets going.
The first set here was twice disrupted by rain and it was Monfils who took
advantage. The match was going with serve and Evans, the No.3 in the world
and seventh seed, was bashing out his service games to love, while Monfils
was merely clinging onto his. Evans had his grass weaponry well-oiled,
serving and volleying clinically.
After the first rain delay Monfils served to love to make it 5-5. Then the
rain fell again and after the restart Evans had lost his momentum, handing
the French boy a break with a feeble double fault. Monfils then held serve
to take the set.
The rain came again, but Evans couldn't capitalise on the chance to regroup.
His first two service games were tight and he conceded on the second as
Monfils rolled out a series of awesome backhands. The top seed was finally
focused on the job at hand, and he romped through the set 6-2, using his
springing service action and deadly backhands to help him through.
Only a fool would bet against Gael Monfils capturing his third Boys' Grand
Slam title this year at Wimbledon. He now meets either Jamie Baker or Jeremy
Chardy in the semi-finals.
