Chardy Charges Into the Semis
Chardy Charges Into the Semis
Thursday, July 1, 2004
The Boys' Singles quarter-final match between Jamie Baker, 16, and Jeremy
Chardy, 15, was a tightly contested game, divided into two by rain breaks,
which Chardy of France took 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Both Baker and Chardy had beaten a seed to advance to the fourth round. The
Glasgow-born Brit ended the run of Kamil Capkovic, the fourth seed from
Slovakia, in straight sets. Chardy disposed of the German Sebastian
Rieschick, No.8 seed, in three sets.
The score stood at 3-3, 30-30 when the umpire suspended play and the covers
went on. When the game continued, Chardy managed the first and only break of
serve in the first set, a long forehand rally giving him a 4-3 lead. The
break of serve proved decisive as all other games went to serve. The French
youngster who dared to venture to the net took the set 6-4.
Baker needed to fight off two break points in his opening service game of the
second set, taking the game with a rare advance to the net. Chardy served his
three first games to love, as if signalling to Baker he could not easily be
thwarted.
Baker, on the other hand, kept his supporters on their toes. He held his
serve at 2-2, forcing his way back from 0-40 down to deuce. The advantage
shifted countless times before Baker finally took the game. He had a
breakpoint at 3-3 and set point at 6-5, but as Chardy was equally stubborn
and did not give any of them away. A tiebreak was inevitable, and Chardy
capped it off by serving a rare ace for 7-4.
Chardy has a tough task ahead, facing top seed and countryman Gael Monfils in
the semi-final. The winner in Australia and Roland Garros this year, Monfils
has lost just one match out of 27 since January.
