Monfils Strolls to Boys' Final Friday, July 2, 2004 Perhaps it was the fact he was playing a fellow French boy, or perhaps it was the music he was listening to on his iPod as he came onto the court, but there was definitely something that helped Gael Monfils focus his game to perfection today. The number one seeded Monfils strolled past Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-2 to reach his third Grand Slam final thisyear, after aleady winning the Australian Open and Roland Garros junior titles in 2004 Monfils hasn't overwhelmed his opponents to get this far and he has shown a tendancy for his concentration to wander, but he has always emerged victorious during this Championships because of his immense talent. And even though he's winning, there really is the feeling with him that so much of his potential still remains untapped. Monfils has confidence, determination and flair in equal measures, and he drew on all three to dispose of Chardy. The match brewed along with the clouds - rain interrupted play on multiple occasions - and after an interchange of breaks in the first set, Chardy put in a rocky service game at 4-all. Slipping on his way to net and crunching onto his back, Chardy gave his opponent two break points. A blistering rally followed, unveiling the huge potential of the pair, and Monfils swept a backhand down the line to come out on top. He then held serve with ease, taking the set 6-4. The two players were far from light years apart, but Monfils again managed to take the chances that came his way and also kept his nerve when the rain came. That is the sign of a champion. After several delays, Monfils came back stronger than ever before to wrap up the match in lightning fashion. Chardy held serve to lead 2-1, but that was the last game he won. Monfils powerful through his own service games and broke Chardy twice without significant effort to take the match and book a place in the final.
