Hewitt, Henman, Haas Move On
No. 2 seed Lleyton Hewitt improved his streak to 18
tournaments in a row without losing an opening round
match this season as he defeated French qualifier and
world junior No. 1 Gael Monfils 6-3, 7-6(3) in one hour
and 53 minutes. The players traded breaks at the start
of the first, but Hewitt broke for a 5-3 lead and served
out the set. There were two breaks each in a dramatic
second set, which the partisan crowd enjoyed.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Hewitt: 洍 felt like I could have easily been 6-3, 6-2
out there, and in the end you get in a bit of a dogfight
for the second set. But to his credit, he kept hanging
in there. When I had breakpoint to go up 4 1 double
break in the second set, he came up with a massive
forehand up the line, when I felt like I had the point
pretty much won. So he's got a lot of talent out there.
He's a very flashy player, like a lot of the top French
players are. He's going to be a tough player in a few
years' time.팊
浶e's obviously a big boy. He moves extremely well
for a tall kid as well. But, yeah, he's a little bit like
myself out there. I think he likes playing in those
situations, and, yeah, even for me, even though you
don't have the crowd on your side, I much prefer
playing in that atmosphere than go out there in such
a big arena, a great arena out there, with no crowd.
After a couple points out there, there was one we were
both at the net volleying and that, you get a standing
ovation. That's what tennis is about; that's why you
play the game.팊
浰eah, for me, Houston is a little bit different this
year compared to Sydney and Shanghai when I had
the opportunity to get No. 1 at the end of the year.
So you sort of go into the Masters Cup with a lot
more pressure, and I don't think you actually probably
enjoy it quite as much because there's that extra
incentive on the end of it to try to finish No. 1. Whereas,
this year, it's an incredible effort for any guy to finish
in the Masters Cup. You know, it shows all the hard
work that you've put in through the whole year to get
there. So I think this year I'll probably enjoy it a little
bit more than Sydney and Shanghai because there
was so much pressure and expectation going into
those two.툊
Monfils: 紟hat I'm pleased about is that there's not
a major difference between him and me. That's what
I'm happy about. Yes, I thought it would be more difficult.
I thought the score would be bad for me. But, in fact, I
worked a lot. I have still a lot of work to do in the future
but, in fact, the gap between him and me is not that large.팊
On the transition from junior tennis: 洍 don't think it's
very important, the transition. I think I have a lot of
work to do. I believe the most important thing I have
to do is watch my fitness, and also it will be different,
it will make a difference for the Grand Slams because
we play best of five sets. I think this transition from
juniors to seniors is going well for me.팊
WEDNESDAY PREVIEW
The second match of the day features French wild
card Cyril Saulnier against No. 12 seed and three-time
ATP winner this year Dominik Hrbaty. The Slovak No. 1
won their previous meeting in the quarterfinals in
Adelaide the first week of the season en route to the title.
In the third match, French qualifier Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
plays No. 13 seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina, another
three-time ATP winner this season. Tsonga came back
to beat No. 30 ranked Mario Ancic 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3,
on Monday night and win his second career ATP match.
The 19-year-old Tsonga, who in September defeated
No. 6 Carlos Moya in Beijing, is No. 179 in this week's
INDESIT ATP Entry Rankings.
