Seeds Advance; Saulnier Lone Frenchman in Draw
No. 13 Guillermo Canas improved to 38-21 on the season as he needed only
one hour and 10 minutes to defeat 19-year-old French qualifier Jo-Wilfried
6-1, 6-3.
French wild card Cyril Saulnier upset No. 12 seed Dominik Hrbaty 7-6(4),
6-2, to keep local title hopes alive.
After winning the first set in a tie-break, Saulnier broke at 3-2 in the
second and then broke Hrbaty again to post his second Top 15 victory of the
season.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Canas: started off very, very well. I tried to control the point all the
time and put pressure on him. I did it well for the first set, and I started
the second set well also. When he reacted, I was able to control him. I was
lucky enough to win that particular game and to be ahead in the score until
the end.
Saulnier: After being broken for the first time: at that moment I had a
few problems with my forehand and my attack, so I had to make do with it.
In my opinion, it's mentally that it was difficult. I had to show him I
wasn't having a letdown. This is why I continued. I fought. I was present
during the first tiebreak.
On showing emotion: That I have to do is try to express myself as often
as possible. For me, it's easier today especially here because I'm in
France in front of a French crowd. It helps me and it's going to help
me in the future, for the next season.
THURSDAY PREVIEW
In the evening session, the lone remaining French hopeful Cyril Saulnier
takes on 20-year-old Swede Robin Soderling for the first time. Saulnier is
looking to reach his first career ATP Masters Series quarterfinal while
Soderling is coming off his first career ATP title in Lyon last month.
