Serena Williams has the talent to once again be the top player in women's tennis, but she needs the commitment to go along with that talent if she's to reach No. 1, says Tracy Austin of NBCSports.com. COMMENTARY By Tracy Austin NBC Sports Updated: 7:57 p.m. ET Dec. 20, 2004 Will there be a prize newcomer breaking through in 2005 like Maria Sharapova did in 2004 by winning Wimbledon and the year-end WTA Championships? I don't see that. But what I do see are a lot of questions over where the respective games of the top players are headed, and none of those questions is more intriguing than that dealing with Serena Williams' future. Ready to rise? One of the hottest debated topics of the tennis offseason is will Serena find the right formula to once again dominate women's tennis in 2005? The only person who can answer that question is Serena. Her celebrity status has kept her busy with off-the-court activities, and on the court, injuries have been a factor. If she wants to recapture the No. 1 ranking, Serena must get on a committed and routine schedule with tennis and fitness as the primary focus. Being injury free is the key for Serena, and a great deal towards preventing injuries can come from making a year-long commitment to being in top shape physically. In my opinion, Serena could return to top, but it seems to me like there's an ebb and flow with her commitment to do so. Lindsay Davenport Why now is there a clear opening for Davenport to pick up some more Grand Slam titles in 2005, when it seemed like there were times in 2004 that she was on the verge of retirement? Well, foremost is that she is finally healthy. With being healthy comes happiness as she is not constantly waking up with some nagging injury that she has to deal with. And with being healthy, also comes a return to a fitness level that allows her to train as much as desired, affording her to get back the feeling of being in a groove heading into matches. If her health holds up, Davenport will be a top threat in 2005 in three of the four Grand Slams, the exception being the French Open played on clay. Maria Sharapova We always thought it was just a matter of time before she would be chasing Grand Slam titles and the No. 1 ranking. Well, that time arrived last season. She has the skills, weapons, and the motivation to get to the top after finishing last season ranked No. 4. In 2005, she will be definitely feeling more pressure because she is going back to tournaments where she is defending a lot of points, and opponents will be after her to get extra bonus points to get the win. I expect that all the attention being thrust on her won't affect her game. In my opinion, those on Team Sharapova are managing Maria's career very wisely, limiting media opportunities, and her endorsement deals. They are managing Maria's time so she does not become diverted from her tennis. Maria's first and foremost goal is to be No. 1 in the world, and with a solid game plan in place, she could reach that goal in 2005. Venus Williams Trying to decipher where Venus is at is tough as she had a 44-12 singles record in 2004, yet finished the year ranked No. 9. I think Venus has lost some confidence, and I think that her opponents are not fearful of her anymore. When Venus used to walk on the court to start a match, her opponents felt defeated. Now they know there are some chinks in Venus' armor, and she's not quite as confident as in the past. I still think Venus has more talent than is indicative of a No. 9 ranking, but there a few adjustments in her game that I would like to see her make for 2005. She needs to raise the consistency of her serve, and make it the nearly unbeatable weapon it was in her earlier seasons on the WTA tour. I would also like to see her forehand become more of a weapon, and the stride to be taken there is also one of improved consistency. Jennifer Capriati Have we seen the best of Jennifer's tennis? Tennis fans and Capriati fans question whether her best tennis is now behind her, but I believe she still has the game to compete at the elite level. After losing a tough three-set U.S. Open semifinal to Elena Dementieva, Capriati played in only one other tournament the rest of the year, losing to Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinals in Philadelphia. Capriati is so strong and she has the weapons to get back up to the top -- if she has the desire. Motivation is the key. If she has it, she can fight her way back up the rankings, (she ended 2004 at No. 10). If my opinion if Jennifer wanted it, and worked hard to get into top-notch physical condition, there's a Grand Slam left to be won by her. The Australian Open, the French Open, the U.S. Open, they are all good fits for her, but she's going to turn 29 at the end of March, so if she does indeed have the determination and desire to win another major, the time to get going is now. Martina Hingis The 24-year-old plans to go to Thailand at the end of January to take part in her first singles action in two years. She once was the talk of women's tennis, becoming the youngest world No. 1 in history, and winning five majors, including three Australian Open titles. But she has not played on the WTA tour since losing an early-round match at Filderstadt in 2002. Hingis needed surgery to correct chronic pain in her left ankle. After that surgery, she decided to take an indefinite break from tennis. Now it seems she wants to play again, although she has not indicated if her comeback will be permanent, while also not revealing if she plans to play in any other events. I think what has to be defined for Hingis is what should be considered a success for her in her return. I think for Hingis whose star shone so brightly, success would only be winning Grand Slams and being one of the top three players in the world -- and I don't see either of those things happening. The reason why is that Hingis has never added the power that is necessary to be a top player in the women's game today. Don't get me wrong, I think Hingis could be a top-10 player, but will she be happy with that -- I don't think so. Amelie Mauresmo In 2005, Mauresmo seeks to establish the mindset that will help her overcome the mental hurdle that seems to work against her in many important matches, and also keep her from winning a major. I think Mauresmo is getting closer and closer to breaking through on this front. She's maturing, and playing better in the bigger matches. I feel she has a chance to win a Grand Slam, but she's yet to prove she can win big match after big match, and that's what's needed to capture a major. Others to watch Anastasia Myskina captured the French Open so she has proven she can win big matches, but I don't see her among the top elite group on a consistent basis, at least not until she gets mentally tougher. Svetlana Kuznetsova is the 19-year-old U.S. Open champion, and she could be grabbing a lot more attention in 2005 as she boasts a positive attitude and a goal to mature and improve her game. Former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters is still recovering from an injured left wrist , and is not expected to play in the Australian Open, but her status as a top player would allow her to use a wild card to get into the Melbourne major if she's able to play. Another former world No. 1, Justine Henin-Hardenne, struggled with a viral infection over the second half of 2004. She didn't play a match after September, but has begun playing exhibitions as a first step in her comeback as she hopes to be ready to defend her Australian Open title.
