French prodigy Gael Monfils will shortly get his first taste of a Grand Slam ma
indraw with the announcement today that Monfils and Capucine Rousseau are the F
rench Tennis Federation’s nominated recipients of the French Wildcards for the
Australian Open (17-30 January 2005).
The 18-year-old Frenchman shot to international awareness in 2004 when he won t
he Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open junior titles to finish the year
as the world’s No.1 junior. En route to his Australian Open success he didn’t
drop a set.
In Qatar this week, he showed he was ready to make the step up with a first rou
nd win over French Open champion Gaston Gaudio in straight sets before losing t
o countryman Fabrice Santoro in three sets in the next round.
24-year-old Capucine Rousseau, world ranked 119, is making her Australian Open
maindraw debut.
Under the French wildcard agreement, the French Tennis Federation may nominate
one male and one female player of their choosing for an Australian Open wildcar
d, in return for the same entry for Australian players into the French Open.
Last year’s recipients were Nicolas Escude and 15-year-old Tatiana Golovin. Go
lovin then ranked 355 in the world, went on to reach the fourth round at the st
art of an amazing 12 months which saw her end the year ranked 27 in the world.
