French 23rd seed Paul-Henri Mathieu has prevailed over Chilean Paul
Capdeville in a captivating second round match 6-7 (7-5) 6-0 6-4 6-4.
Both players came out hitting hard early, holding their service games
confidently.
Capdeville was playing particularly sharp tennis in the first set,
winning some impressive points down the line with his strong forehand.
The first set was decided by a tiebreak, which Mathieu led 4-2 before
Capdeville stormed ahead with his rapid returns, winning 7-5.
Momentum quickly changed in the second set as Mathieu broke Capdeville's
serve three times in a row, overpowering his opponent from every angle.
Things began to unravel for Capdeville as his serve weakened and his
forehand lost its accuracy, failing to win a game in the second set.
But the Chilean managed to regain his composure in the third set,
remaining on serve until Mathieu broke him before taking the set.
Capedeville was down a break midway through the fourth set when he
called for a trainer to attend to an apparent lower-back injury.
Sensing his opponent's weakness, Mathieu took control when play
resumed and ended the match after 184 minutes.
