Monfils mauls Argentine in Open return

Men’s world No.14 Gael Monfils has advanced to the second round of
Australian Open 2009 after a comfortable 6-1 6-3 7-5 win over Argentina’s
Martin Vassallo Arguello.
Monfils, who missed last year’s Australian Open due to injury, won the first
set easily in 45 minutes.
Serving first in the second set, Vassallo Arguello, once ranked as high as 58
in the world, struggled to hold serve. In an epic first game where both
players failed to capitalise on opportunities to take the lead, the Argentine
finally prevailed after 15 minutes to go 1-0 up.
However, his lead was short-lived. Monfils’s combination of nine forehand
winners, three successful volleys and two backhand winners secured the second
set in 48 minutes.
Vassallo Arguello gave his opponent greater competition in the third set.
Taking advantage of a break, he took an early 3-1 lead before the 22-year-old
Frenchman asserted his authority, taking out the set and match 7-5 in two
hours and 26 minutes.
Monfils now moves on to the second round where he’ll meet Austria’s Stefan
Koubek, who impressively defeated Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny in three sets.
