Gasquet sets up clash with Gonzalez Thursday 22 January 2009 By Vanessa Skendaris Frenchman Richard Gasquet booked a place in the third round of Australian Open 2009 on Thursday, defeating Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in straight sets, 6-3 6-4 6-4. Gasquet, the men’s 24th seed, dashed to a 3-1 lead in the first set after breaking Istomin’s serve. Istomin pushed the 22-year-old Frenchman, winning back the break then levelling the match at 3-3. Gasquet then jumped to a 5-3 lead with another break, and secured the set in 39 minutes. Up 2-1 in the second set with a break, Gasquet went on to jump to a 5-3 lead over the 187cm Istomin. Serving to close the set at 40-0, Gasquet was unable to hold as Istomin hit back at the Frenchman, clubbing a forehand winner. His resurgence was short-lived, however, as the Frenchman took a decisive two-sets-to-love advantage. Gasquet quickly took control in the third set, snatching an early break then strolling to a 3-1 lead. In a more competitive set, Istomin displayed some good form, hitting six winners and delivering three aces to draw level at 3-3. Gasquet then broke Istomin’s serve, giving him an opportunity to serve out the match which he duly did in 43 minutes. Gasquet will now meet 13th seed Fernando Gonzalez in the third round. Gonzalez, the 2007 en’s singles runner-up at Melbourne Park, beat Guillermo Canas of Argentina 7-5 6-3 6-4.
