Mauresmo Claims Philadelphia Title
November 02, 2003
Top seeded Amelie Mauresmo won her second title of the season, capturing
the Advanta Championships by defeating No. 3 seed Anastasia Myskina, 57,
60, 62. After both finalists had survived 2 & 1/2 hour semifinal matches
and returned to the courts approximately ten hours later, it was Mauresmo
who prevailed to win her tenth career WTA Tour singles title.
"I felt at the beginning that it was tough physically to move well,
especially after last night. But as the match went on I felt I was
moving better."
After struggling in the first set and falling 57, Mauresmo accelerated
her game in the second set, not losing any games and giving up only
eight points. Myskina had trouble rebounding after the second set
and lost her first championship final in 2003.
During the on court ceremony, Mauresmo said to Myskina, "You beat me
last time in Moscow, and now it's my turn here in Philly." Mauresmo
won $93,000 plus an extra $1,000 in cash presented by Dennis Alter, CEO
of Advanta Corp.
Myskina was appearing in her fifth final of 2003, winning all previous
four finals of Doha, Sarasota, Leipzig, and Moscow. Myskina said,
"I'm very happy with my tournament and am so happy to be in the top
eight for the Championships. That was my goal all year."
Both Mauresmo and Myskina will be competing in the prestigious Bank
of America WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche this week in
Los Angeles.
The top seeded doubles team of Martina Navratilova and Lisa Raymond won
their first title together, defeating Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs, 63,
62. Navratilova and Raymond plan on playing together in the 2004 season
and are anxious about teaming together for the upcoming Fed Cup, as well.
Raymond said, “My doubles goal for the week was to win the tournament.
I think we started a new partnership on the right foot. It gives us a
lot to look forward to next year. To have our debut in Philadelphia,
I couldn't think of a better place to do it." Navratilova followed
that sentiment, saying, "I'm so excited about next year that I can't
even stand it.”
Advanta gave children’s racquets to each of the singles and doubles
finalists, to be donated to a school or youth tennis program of their
choice. As the singles champion, Mauresmo was awarded 500 racquets,
which she will donate to the program of her choice, along with 250 for
Myskina. Navratilova and Raymond were also given 250 racquets each,
along with Stubbs and Black receiving 100 each.
