Team Profile: Michael Llodra & Fabrice Santoro
Power and touch blend seamlessly in this feisty French partnership between
free-swinging Michael Llodra and the velvet skills of double-handed veteran
Fabrice Santoro.
When Llodra's big serve is on, he can seem unbreakable. Dubbed "the magician,"
Santoro can hit shots that no one else can—including a topspin lob off a
return—and he does not have an exploitable weakness. Opponents find it
difficult to poach against Santoro because he seemingly 'holds' his returns
and volleys longer than anyone else, making it difficult to know which way
he's going. He doesn't overpower opponents but bewitches them with spin,
touch and deception.
Asked why they gel well together, Santoro said: "Because he's younger and
crazy and I'm older and more stable. I can use him because he's full of power
and energy and he can use me for my experience. It's a good combination."
Llodra and Santoro won the Australian Open doubles title in January,
reversing the result of the 2002 Melbourne final with Mark Knowles and
Daniel Nestor.
Santoro said: "There will be eight great teams playing. I think our first
goal is to get into the final four. That's what you need to shoot for. From
there, anything can happen and you can come out as champions. Playing the
doubles with the singles will create a great atmosphere and I think it's
the best way for us to build popularity for the doubles.”
