2003 IN REVIEW The Frenchman enjoyed his most successful year on the ATP circuit after winning a personal-best 14 matches and finishing in Top 100 for first time at No. 87... Highlight of season came with first career ATP SF in Tokyo... Also qualified into five main draw events during year... Began season by playing four of first five tournaments on Challenger circuit, winning title in Besancon (d. Taino) in native France... Later in March, qualified into TMS Miami and reached 2nd RD (d. Ljubicic, l. to Roddick in third set tie-break)... On clay, qualified into Barcelona but retired in 1st RD against Sanchez after winning first set with right thigh injury... Missed next three weeks before returning at Kosice Challenger (l. to Hajek in 1st RD)... After 1st RD loss at Roland Garros to Chela, turned to grass and advanced to 3rd RD at Queen's... Defeated former champion Draper in 1st RD and Mirnyi in 2nd RD before losing to Henman in three sets... Qualified into Wimbledon and defeated 2002 semifinalist Malisse in 1st RD before losing to eventual finalist Philippoussis in 2nd RD... Two weeks later, reached first QF of season at Newport (d. Heuberger, d. Draper, l. to B. Bryan)... On North American hard courts, lost to eventual champion Roddick in another third set tie-break in 2nd RD and reached same stage in Washington, losing to Srichaphan... Qualified into TMS Montreal (l. to Ferrero in 1st RD) and lost to Srichaphan again at US OpenaIn September, advanced to first career SF in Tokyo, defeating Novak in 3rd RD, Philippoussis (ret) in QF before losing to eventual champion Schuettler... Finished season with 2nd RD showing in Lyon (d. Fish, l. to Ginepri)... Compiled 8-9 record on hard courts, 5-3 on grass, 1-1 on carpet, 0-2 on clay.
