2003 IN REVIEW The Frenchman enjoyed his best season on ATP circuit, compiling a career-high 16 match-wins and finishing in Top 100 for first time... Also appeared in all four Grand Slams during season for first time, as well as making debut at Tennis Masters Series level... Began season by reaching first ATP SF in Chennai, posting wins over Pless, Okun and Schuettler before losing to eventual champion Srichaphan... At Australian Open, defeated Gaudenzi in five sets to reach 2nd RD for first time before losing to Ferrero... Returned to Challenger circuit in early February and reached QF at Wroclaw... In March, qualified for first TMS tournament in Miami... Defeated Gasquet in 1st RD before losing to Schalken in 2nd RD... During European clay court swing, advanced to 2nd RD in Casablanca, Munich, St. Poelten and Roland Garros, as well as qualifying for TMS Hamburg (l. to Nalbandian in 1st RD)... Played just one grass court tournament, losing to Ferrero in 1st RD at Wimbledon... Returned to clay in July and reached consecutive 2nd RDs in Gstaad, Amersfoort and Umag... At US Open, savied one match against M. Norman before winning in fifth set tie-break in 1st RD (l. to Federer in 2nd RD)... Finished season by reaching 2nd RD in Metz and qualifying for St. Petersburg (l. to Schuettler)... Compiled 9-10 record on hard, 7-8 on clay, 0-1 on grass.
