2003 IN REVIEW Another injury plagued season for the Frenchman, who was forced to miss last six months with a hip injury.... Withdrew or retired from five of the 10 ATP tournaments he played in during season... As a result, finished outside Top 100 for first time since 1994... When he returns, he will have a protected ranking of 63 for nine months or eight tournaments... Began year with good early performances, reaching 3rd RD at Australian Open (l. to eventual champion Agassi) and helped France to Davis Cup World Group victory over Romania by defeating Pavel and Trifu in 4-1 victory in Bucharest in February... Advanced to SF in Marseille but was unable to play against Bjorkman with right hamstring injury... Returned to action following week and reached QF in Rotterdam but hamstring injury forced his retirement against Grosjean with score tied at 4-4 in third set... Missed next month before returning at TMS Miami, where he reached 4th RD with wins over Hrbaty, Henman and Fish before losing to Moya... In April, represented France in Davis Cup QF loss to Switzerland (l. to Federer, d. Bastl)... After 1st RD loss to Vicente at TMS Monte-Carlo, returned to Challenger circuit and withdrew prior to 2nd RD match against Ascione with hip injury... Lost in 1st RD at Roland Garros for fourth consecutive season (l. to Nieminen) On grass, retired in 1st RD against Stepanek in Halle with left groin injury, which reoccurred in 2nd RD at Wimbledon, where he retired against Ferrero while trailing two sets to one on Centre Court...
