"I still have the same dreams: to give my maximum in order to get as high as possible," the 20 year-old told French sports daily L'Equipe. "Big defeats make you improve as well as great victories."He(Youzhny) hit incredible shots. I knew he was talented. Forehand, backhand, he did everything. But he had no fear and even if he looked tired at times, he finished strongly." Mathieu said he never felt the match, which he lost 3-6 2-6 6-3 7-5 6-4, was slipping from his grasp. "Even in the fifth set, I came back for 3-3. No, even when he was serving for the match, I was still there. I hoped I would come back and told myself that he was not mentally strong. But he was. " He recalled his similar defeat from two sets up against Andre Agassi in the French Open earlier this year, arguing it had been a turning point in his career. "I'm persuaded this one (against Youzhny) will have the same effect." After he was defeated in five sets by Agassi at Roland Garros, Mathieu won two tournaments in a row, in Moscow then in Lyon, before he had to pull out of the Paris Masters Series with an injury. But Mathieu said he was not comforted by the fact many players, including 14-times grand slam winner Pete Sampras, failed in their early Davis Cup career. "I wanted to be better than them," he said. He added he was aware the whole country was behind him but did not want to elaborate. "It is true many things have happened, but I don't want to focus on that. I'm still the same, I will go on training. There is still work do be done and I know it."
