Cahill denies Federer switch rumour
Darren Cahill has confirmed that rumours linking him as the future coach to
world number one Roger Federer are unfounded. The Australian insists he will
continue to travel with Andre Agassi and the 34-year-olds trainer Gil Reyes
through the 2005 season, reports James Buddell.
Cahill believes his close friendship with Federer's former coach, Peter
Cater, who died in a car accident in August 2002, has fuelled press
speculation since Roland Garros in May.
"They [the press] know that Peter Carter was a great friend of mine and Peter
was really responsible for the upbringing of Roger from about 11 or 12 years
of age. He coached Roger all the way through.
"So when Peter passed away and then obviously Roger Federer decided to go
coach less this past year, a lot of the media put two and two together,"
Cahill told reporters on Sunday.
But the 39-year-old remains faithful to Agassi; despite not realising the
American would continue to play into his 35th year.
When Carter left former world number one Lleyton Hewitt in December 2001, he
did realise how long the commitment to Agassi would be.
"I went across when he was 32 years of age and I didn't know if it was going
to be a six-month job or a one-year or two-year job. But I'm still here and
it's three years later.
"He's totally committed to 2005 and beyond.
Cahill also praised the work of Agassi's trainer Reyes as the key to the
champion's longevity.
The pair have been together since 1990 and Agassi and wife Steffi named their
first child after Reyes.
"He makes sure he's (Agassi) ready for every single tournament and physically
everyone acknowledges Andre is an incredible presence on the court. He always
hits the ball extremely well.
"But to still be fit and strong and move as well he did when he was in his
early 20s, thanks would have to go to Gil for that."
Agassi has won eight major singles titles.
