2011 French Open 4th Round (May 28, 2011)
Roger Federer def. Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-2, 7-5
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Would you just comment on your form today? You haven't had too much
trouble with Stan in the past few matches, but still, you looked very, very
strong today. He didn't play that badly.
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I thought since the tough match we had in Stockholm
actually where he was I think up a set and a break and was really beating me
quite easily, maybe I found a way to play him. And since then I've played
well against him, now in Australia and Indian Wells and here.
So I'm very happy with the way it went. I knew the danger coming into this
match on clay. I think still it is his best surface, even though maybe in the
overall scheme of things it's been somewhat of a disappointing clay court
season for him. He didn't play Monaco and maybe he went through the same
thing I went through last year, just not having enough matches for a bit of a
period.
But, look, I thought I played well today. I think the first two sets were
great. Then in the third set it was unfortunate I couldn't get break point in
the first game. He then took his chance in the one service game. Maybe I
didn't play my very best. And from then on it was a tough match.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. You've won tournaments on clay on all kinds of conditions, slow stuff,
fast stuff. What do you prefer to play on if you have your choice?
ROGER FEDERER: You mean on clay obviously?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Yeah.
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I have been asked this question a lot, to be honest. I'm
not sure. I think you have to be able to play your best in all conditions. I
figure that the slow clay would be the worst. But, then again, the slice kind
of stays lower and it gives you a bit more time, a bit more grip when you
slide. And then when it's fast, obviously the serve takes off more and it's
more slippery and harder to control.
So I'm not sure, you know. I think both are tricky. And it depends also who
you play against in those conditions. Yeah, so honestly I don't have a
preference as long as it's not raining. I think that's just uncomfortable for
everybody.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Patty Schnyder obviously retired this past weekend. I remember you had
some savage battles with her brother. I'm wondering what it means to you that
she is retiring? Do you have any memories of her from early on?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I have a lot of memories from her brother. We
played 15 times. We're good friends. We didn't practice together, but
obviously spent a lot of time at the tournaments and so forth.
Patty was obviously-- because she was two years older and women develop
quicker and have quicker success, she was always someone sort of to look up
to in the region especially. I even ball-boyed her once at a prize-money
tournament in my club.
So I always followed her very closely, always very friendly. I thought she
had a great career. She said it herself. She beat everybody who was in the
game. I remember I even went to the stadium at the US Open when she beat
Steffi Graf and was able to watch that years ago.
Yeah, I mean, we were very fortunate having such great players over the past
few years with Hingis, Schnyder, and Stan now, and Rosset and so forth. I
think we've had a wonderful spell of players. Yeah, it's unfortunate to see
her retire, but she's been one of the girls who hung in there for a very long
time. I think that deserves a lot of respect, obviously.
Stan、Rosset
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. You and Stan just came off court, and then Gasquet and Novak went out. If
you think about it, it's four pretty incredible backhands. Could you talk
about...
ROGER FEDERER: That's what it is. I don't know.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Could you talk about the backhand stroke a one-hander versus a two-hander?
Which is better for the modern game, strengths and weaknesses? Who has the
best ones out there?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, two are out there right now. I have seen many
good ones over the years starting with Connors, I guess, and maybe even
before, Borg and... Yeah, I'm forgetting many, you know. It depends on what
kind of a surface you're playing on, you know. I think we always adapt our
techniques compared to the conditions, you know.
I think the strings have changed the game in the last I think 15 years quite
a lot, or 20 years, let's say. Racquets maybe first, then the strings
followed suit the last 10 years. I think that has allowed us to play with
much more spin so we can use extreme grips.
I sometimes find probably two-hander is probably better these days, but just
because I think the slice is a shot you can work on, you know, as a
two-hander, too, and have a good one, too. But then you're maybe caught in,
When should I play what shot? So that's maybe a bit of the issue when you
have a two-hander; whereas with the one-hander it's very natural. You know
when to slice. You know when to come over it. Because with your footwork,
then there's only one option which makes it just a bit easier.
But then the variety is obviously nicer to have I think with a one-hander.
But you've got to be strong. I think it's hard early on when you're young to
switch to a one-hander, just because it takes a lot of strength, which you
don't have early on, so it's frustrating.
I went through that, and honestly I can't believe how good my backhand has
become over the years, because it was never my strength. But everybody played
into it, and today it's actually pretty good. I think that happened to many
players out there on tour. You know, you thought this guy has a weak
forehand, everybody plays into it, and all of a sudden today it's a great
forehand.
We help each other out really, I think. (Laughter.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Obviously Novak has an incredible streak going. You've had some incredible
successes. Does a player in his mindset ever get to the point where you think
like you can't lose, you just expect to always win? Can you talk about that a
little bit?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean, to a degree. I think you'll definitely feel invincible
at times, like with certain players who you have a great record against, you
have never lost or you beat the guy over six, seven times in a row and stuff
like that.
We definitely go into the match thinking, Jeez, something really crazy has to
happen today that I will lose. But in a knockout system like we have in
tennis, you're never quite sure. That's why you always prepare the same way,
take the same amount of shirts, same amount of racquets, and don't
underestimate and not disrespect any opponents.
The trickier part is all of a sudden you think I'm winning so much,
eventually it's going to snap that streak. That was the trickier part for me;
when everybody started to talk about it, the more there was talk, the more
likely it was going to happen.
It's kind of tough to keep your head down and just focus, really.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Everybody talks about Djokovic, but you've also beat a record today
reaching the quarterfinals. So he has pressure. There is less pressure on
you. So is this something which is favorable in a Grand Slam?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I'm focusing on my next opponent that will be either
Monfils or Ferrer, I think.
Right now I'm just happy I managed to beat Stan. He's a great player. At the
same time, I'm a bit sad for him. I've not had time to think about anything
else over the last 45 minutes, so that's why. My preparation is going to
start later this afternoon and tomorrow when I'll practice again. That's the
way it goes.
Quarterfinals, 28 quarterfinals in a row, that's great, but that's another
opportunity for me to go one step further. That's why I'm very proud I
accomplished that, and I hope I can go one step further than last year, and
then we'll see.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. If you want to give a piece of advice to Stan in order to win just one set
to you, what kind of advice would you give him? Because apart in Monaco and
after your wedding, the feeling is that the script is always the same?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, he was leading 6-2, 2-1, break in Stockholm, and I was a
bit afraid. And I'm still surprised I managed to turn this match around. Then
in Australia I varied my shots quite well. It was a bit difficult in the
second set, but I did manage and I won. And in Indian Wells it was something
else. I mean, maybe he was not very much in the match at that time. So I'm
not going to talk about this match, but today he had opportunities. He was
close, very close.
But it's important not to be impressed by these matches against me. He needs
to find a positive, even if there is not a lot of positive things. He should
not take this defeat as something horrible. It may happen to-- it sometimes
happens to some players, and I hope this is not going to be the case for him.
I hope he continues to work and practice and think positive, because he plays
very well.
。
But I really varied my game, and that probably made it more difficult for
him. But he doesn't play like any other player, either. But probably it was
difficult for him, because I played high quality tennis today, especially
during the first two sets.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. With regards to your next opponent, you defeated David Ferrer 11 times in
a row. It's more tight with Gaël with highly disputed matches over the past
few years. What do you think about this potential match against Gaël?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I beat him in semifinals and quarterfinals. That's two
times here in Roland Garros. So I know the match. I'm not going to say it's
reassuring, but this is something I've already experienced.
As for Ferrer, I don't think I ever played him in a Grand Slam. I don't think
so. I probably played him in a five-sets match in Shanghai, but otherwise I
have never played David and never played him on clay except perhaps in
Hamburg and once in Monaco. But even if I have more wins than him-- then
there was Madrid also last year in semifinals. But I'll try and prepare the
match very well, because that's going to be a big match in quarterfinals.
Monaco (Monte
So whatever the opponent, I think it's going to be a very tough match.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Can you explain what happened during the beginning of the third set? I
mean, was it lack of concentration? Lack of focus?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I don't know. Maybe; maybe not. I missed a backhand in
the first game, and there was the wind and I thought I had to win that point
to break. And I thought maybe if I can break him now, it's going to change
everything. And then I was playing with the wind against me, and it was a bad
game because all of a sudden there was more wind, and I had the feeling that
I was playing against the wind and not against Stan.
。
So in the end I made wrong decisions. And then there was a double fault, and
the first point was on the net and then it was out, and then it was Love-30
and everything was more difficult. So it's a bit of a shame, but I also knew
that Stan would be difficult and dangerous at the beginning of the third set,
so maybe I really wanted to take the lead, and maybe I was a bit too fast.
