Chinese Taipei edge Singapore
Chinese Taipei - CHINESE Taipei overcame wet conditions and a delayed
kick-off to beat the visiting Singapore side 2-1 at the Chungshan Stadium
yesterday (Wednesday) in the first leg of their postponed First Round
Olympic qualifiers. The clash was among three First Round ties postponed
several months due to SARS.
The hosts started strongly and scored the opener after 15 minutes through
Lee Ming-chian, who watched his fortunate rebound from a tackle by
Singapore national team defender Baihakki Khaizan loop over goalkeeper
Lionel Lewis.
Singapore equalised just before the break when Mustaqim Manzur surged down
the right before crossing to Shahril Ishak, who beat a defender before
netting.
The visitors enjoyed more possession in the second period, but Chinese
Taipei scored the winner with 15 minutes to go when Tu Ming-feng made
the most of a Lewis clearance, his deflected shot ending up in the net
and causing delight in the stands.
Singapore coach P.N.Sivaji was disappointed but believed his side could
turn the result around next Wednesday at the Jalan Besar Stadium(大馬路球場@@).
"It旧 a blow because we expected to win this game. The boys didn急 take
their chances and gave the ball away far too easily," Sivaji was reported
as saying in The Straits Times.
"At least we managed to get an away goal and that will be crucial in the
second leg. The boys are dejected, but they虐e determined to put this
right. I観 sure they歓l pull it off when we meet Taiwan again."
Saudi Arabia await the winners in the Second Round, with matches scheduled
for October 1 and 7.
