That issue is up for debate. Some people believe neither Nick Van Exel or Speedy Claxton are the type of player that can run a team full time. Others feel Claxton is exactly the kind of guy for the job. With the draft coming up quickly, and the Warriors possessing the 11th pick, some analysts predict GS will take a point guard, possibly Jameer Nelson. This move wouldn't be terrible, simply because the Warriors have no clear-cut need, but why Nelson? A point guard is understandable, but selecting Nelson would be foolish. Why you ask?... The arguments against Speedy Claxton are many. He's too small, too injury prone, and he's really more of a shoot first point guard. Well, guess what kids, Jameer Nelson isn't much different. Nelson is listed as 6'0 190 lbs, whereas Claxton is 5'11 and 170 lbs if you went by Warriors.com. So size is a wash. Nelson is also considered a score-first point guard, so it's not like he would be able to come in and amaze people with his passing skills. The only thing he might have over Speedy is toughness, but that's yet to be seen. Put Nelson through a full season in the NBA and THEN we'll see how tough he is. 82 games is much different than a full college season... When you break it down, Speedy Claxton is a proven product in the NBA. He may be somewhat injury prone, he may be somewhat offensive minded, but you know what you're going to get with him. When healthy, he was playing at a very high level for the Warriors last season. To ditch him now, after having such a nice season (when healthy), would be foolish. Give him some time, and Speedy could turn into a real gem for the 'Dubs.
