http://tinyurl.com/63fe3 Warriors spiraling out of control By Marcus Thompson II, CONTRA COSTA TIMES CHICAGO - Between the third and fourth quarters at the United Center on Monday, after the Chicago Bulls put together a 24-8 run to take a 19-point lead into the final period, Warriors coach Mike Montgomery went collegiate. He gave a speech about playing for dignity, going down swinging, never giving up, respecting the game ... rah, rah, rah. "I just said, 'Hey guys, we've got to play for pride,'" Montgomery said. "We've got to finish this thing off strong. We've got to learn how to play." It worked, sort of. The Warriors did respond, rallying to pull to within single digits and outplaying Chicago the final 12 minutes. But they still lost, 94-85, extending their losing streak to six games. Even with the resiliency they displayed Monday, initiated in part by Montgomery's speech, the Warriors still consider this road trip a missed opportunity. Even without guard Jason Richardson, who missed his sixth consecutive game Monday, some players said they should have won at least a couple of games. The Warriors were in the first two games of the road trip, at Boston and New Jersey, until the end -- they had the ball with a chance to win in the final seconds vs. the Celtics. In the last two games, they were in control for much of the first half before falling behind big. "Yes, we miss J-Rich," said forward Troy Murphy, who finished with eight points on 2-for-11 shooting and 14 rebounds. "But these are teams that we are capable of beating in spite of that." Another dismal third quarter was too much to overcome. After Mickael Pietrus' buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the half, the Warriors trailed just 49-48. But they were outscored 35-17 in the third quarter. They made just 2 of 12 attempts (16.7 percent) from the field. They didn't score any points in the paint, saved by a sudden stretch of stellar free throw shooting. They made 12 of 15 in the quarter after making just 8 of 16 in the first half. The Warriors' eight turnovers in the quarter led to 16 Chicago points. The Bulls made 15 of 22 attempts from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc, and had 10 of their 24 assists in the quarter. Chicago had two 9-0 runs and an 8-0 spurt. The third-quarter meltdown came one night after the Warriors gave up a season-high 36 points in the third quarter of a 109-87 loss at the Toronto Raptors, who pulled away with a 15-0 run. "I thought, 'This is the same (expletive) that happened (Sunday) night," said point guard Speedy Claxton, who finished with 24 points, eight assists, three steals and five turnovers. orz ) "We usually play three good quarters of basketball and have one bad stretch," said forward Mike Dunleavy, who finished with 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting. "We had one really bad stretch." The difference between the two losses, however, was that the Warriors never showed any life once the Raptors took off. Monday, they did. The Warriors held Chicago to 10 fourth-quarter points. They outscored the Bulls 18-5 over the first 10-plus minutes of the quarter. A 3-pointer by Murphy from the top of the key capped a 7-0 run and cut Chicago's lead to 89-83 with 1:47 left in the game. The Bulls closed the door with five consecutive points, a Tyson Chandler tip in and a Chris Duhon 3-pointer. Claxton hit a jumper to cut the game to the Warriors' deficit to nine with 44 seconds left, but the Warriors decided not to foul and extend the game. "Yes, I was pleased with our comeback, but I wasn't happy about the performance prior to that," Montgomery said. "I wasn't happy about how we got in that position. We started out the third quarter in good shape and came out in poor shape. That's the way it's been for us. "We have to keep battling and playing together," Montgomery added. Rah, rah, rah. Rah, rah, rah.
