Gamewatch: Murray v Srichaphan
Thailand Open semi-final result:
A Murray (GB) v P Srichaphan (Tha)
6-7 7-5 6-2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Third set:
Murray 6-2 Srichaphan:
Fittingly, Murray takes the set and match with a wonderfully worked winner.
The 18-year-old is into his first ever ATP final after a performance mixing
shot-making of the highest quality with sheer guts. Now for world number one
Roger Federer...
Murray 5-2 Srichaphan:
Murray rattles through his service game at pace and is now only one game away
from a brilliant win. Srichaphan must hold serve to stay in the match.
Murray 4-2 Srichaphan:
Murray is only getting stronger and seizes upon Srichaphan's tiredness to
break him in fantastic style. Once again he builds the key points with
patience and skill, and Srichaphan has no answer. Can the teenage Briton hold
on to reach his first ever ATP final?
Murray 3-2 Srichaphan:
Srichaphan gives Murray a jolt as he goes to 30-30, but Murray - as throughout
this enthralling semi-final - lifts himself when he needs it most and holds on
for the game. Srichaphan, on his fourth t-shirt of the match, is looking weary
and calls for the trainer between games.
Murray 2-2 Srichaphan:
It's all square again as Srichaphan raises the tempo and goes on the attack.
The crowd had gone a little quiet after Murray won the second set tie-break
but now the cheers and screams are back.
Murray 2-1 Srichaphan:
A mis-hit forehand from Murray gives Srichaphan a break point, but Murray hits
a forehand winner to take it back to deuce and then takes the game with ease.
He looks completely at home at this level despite playing a man ranked almost
80 places higher, a man who has won this tournment twice before.
Murray 1-1 Srichaphan:
Srichaphan finds a little of his old fire and form to hit two winners and
hold serve comfortably.
Murray 1-0 Srichaphan:
Murray picks up where he left off, holding serve with a succession of solid
first serves and so denying Srichaphan the chance to attack his second serve,
the area which hurt him in the first set.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second set:
Murray 7-5 Srichaphan:
Murray strikes like a champion in the making, hitting a great cross-court
passing shot to set up three break points and then forcing Srichaphan to net
a volley. He takes the game and set and goes into the decider with all the
momentum in his favour.
Murray 6-5 Srichaphan:
Now Murray has another opportunity to pile the pressure on Srichaphan after
holding serve well. But the trainer is called to examine the Briton's right
hand, which is clearly bothering him.
Murray 5-5 Srichaphan:
Murray once again gets Srichaphan to 30-30. He then appears to hurt his right
hand stretching for a deep backhand but battles to deuce, only to see his
chance slip away with an over-hit backhand. Will he regret not taking these
mini-chances?
Murray 5-4 Srichaphan:
Murray goes to his big first serve and holds to 15, changing tactics to serve
and volley to take the last two points.
Murray 4-4 Srichaphan:
At 30-30, Murray at last has his first glimpse of a break in this set. But
Srichaphan stays stronger in the key points to keep it all square.
Murray 4-3 Srichaphan:
Murray goes 0-30 down after netting a simple volley, but he shows his
character to win four points on the bounce and save the game just when it
looked like the beginning of the end.
Murray 3-3 Srichaphan:
Murray still cannot get a sniff of a break. Srichaphan has roared to 40-0 in
each of his service games in this set and anything Murray produces then is too
little too late.
Murray 3-2 Srichaphan:
Murray holds serve with a nerveless display. He shows none of the gaucheness
one would expect from an 18-year-old in his first year as a professional.
Murray 2-2 Srichaphan:
Srichaphan looks increasingly comfortable on his own serve. As in the first set
, it is hard for Murray to put enough pressure on the Thai to work an
opportunity to break.
Murray 2-1 Srichaphan:
Murray has so many shots in his armoury that even against a vastly more
experienced player he can develop a chance to win the point by gradually
working an opening.
Murray 1-1 Srichaphan:
Home favourite Srichaphan serves powerfully to hold with ease.
Murray 1-0 Srichaphan:
The British teenager responds well to the disappointment of losing the first
set, holding to 15. He shows his speed around the court by chasing down
Srichaphan drop shots in consecutive points.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First set:
Murray 6-7 (3-7) Srichaphan:
Srichaphan comes up with two breathtaking returns to take an early lead in
the tie-break, and Murray then double-faults to go 1-5 down. He throws his
racquet away in anger, nets another easy forehand and Srichaphan takes the
set.
Murray 6-6 Srichaphan
Murray raises his game once again just when he needs it the most. Srichaphan
is playing a big-hitting, high tempo game but Murray refuses to be cowed and
levels to take the set to the tie-break.
Murray 5-6 Srichaphan
Murray produces his best tennis to take Srichaphan to three deuces and then
a break point, only for Srichaphan to take control of an epic point to hold
on. Murray works another break but then nets three simple groundstrokes in a
row to gift his opponent the game.
Murray 5-5 Srichaphan
Fighting to stay in the set, Murray hits his biggest serve of the match so
far to bring things level again. The big worry for him is that so far he has
not been able to pressure Srichaphan's serve enough.
Murray 4-5 Srichaphan
It's tough for Murray - having held his own serve, he wants to attack
Srichaphan but the Thai races to a 40-0 lead. A wonderful sliced backhand
from Murray gives him a glimmer of a chance, but Srichaphan's measured serve
holds true and the pressure is back on.
Murray 4-4 Srichaphan
Better from Murray - he finds his range with his first serve and takes the
game with just one dropped point.
Murray 3-4 Srichaphan
Srichaphan, in contrast to Murray, holds comfortably. Every one of Murray's
service games has gone to deuce, and it's the last thing the tired young
Briton needs.
Murray 3-3 Srichaphan
A double fault from Murray costs him on game point, and he then puts a
backhand wide to gift Srichaphan a break point, only for the Thai to miss his
attempted winner. Murray then fights back from two more break points to hold
his serve admirably under pressure.
Murray 2-3 Srichaphan
Srichaphan's serve is still mis-firing slightly but he has enough power in
his groundstrokes to take the game.
Murray 2-2 Srichaphan
Murray draws level after holding his service despite two deuce points. He is
targeting his opponent's backhand with some success.
Murray 1-2 Srichaphan
Murray strikes back immediately with a succession of well-worked points. He
seals the service break with a heavily-sliced backhand which Srichaphan can
only put into the net.
Murray 0-2 Srichaphan
Murray nets a simple overhead smash to lose his first service game. He looks
a little weary, whereas Srichaphan is fired up in front of his home crowd.
Murray 0-1 Srichaphan
A netted backhand from Murray and ace from Srichaphan seals the first game
for the Thai home favourite after Murray battles back from 0-30 to 30-30.
