Henman takes opening win in Spain
Tim Henman made impressive progress into the second round of the Madrid
Masters Series with a 6-2 6-4 win over American Taylor Dent.
The British number one has failed to advance beyond the second round on
his previous three appearances in Madrid.
But he broke Dent in the first game of the match and then held to
establish an immediate advantage.
In the second round he faces Czech 10th seed Radek Stepanek, who beat
Henman in the recent ATP event in Vienna.
Henman took advantage of some erratic serving from Dent to take the first
set and although the American found some consistency in the second, he never
looked like winning.
"I was very happy with my level of play," the unseeded Briton said
afterwards.
"Hopefully I can build on this in the last few tournaments of the year as
I'm feeling better and better on court.
"I'm happy with the way I'm hitting the ball. I feel motivated but having
played so little I still feel pretty fresh and in a good frame of mind."
