Murray beaten in Memphis quarters
Murray was "mentally tired" after seven straight wins
Andy Murray's fine run of form ended with a heavy defeat to Sweden's
Robin Soderling in Memphis on Friday.
The 18-year-old will take over from Tim Henman as British number one on
Monday following last week's win in San Jose.
And Murray went into his quarter-final on the back of seven straight wins
and with a 2-0 record against Soderling.
But the punishing schedule finally caught up with the Scot and Soderling
powered to a 6-1 6-4 victory and a place in the semi-finals.
"I fought until the end of my match, just mentally it wasn't quite there
today," Murray said afterwards.
"It's difficult to keep that up for two weeks at a time, that's why it's so
tough to win a Grand Slam.
"At least there you have days off in between but here I had to play right
through Wednesday, Thursday and Friday which was difficult."
And Murray admitted that his maiden title win in San Jose last week had
finally taken its toll.
I'm a little bit disappointed to lose but happy with the last couple of
weeks
Andy Murray
"I was a little bit tired mentally," he said. "It's really difficult to keep
a run going, especially after the week I had last week.
"Against someone who serves as well as he does you need to be focused on
every point on your own service game and today I wasn't like that.
"I'm a little bit disappointed to lose but happy with the last couple of
weeks."
Meanwhile, top seed Andy Roddick surprisingly lost 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) to
France's Julien Benneteau.
Roddick, who lost to Murray in the semi-finals of the San Jose Open last
week, said he had to admire the performance of Benneteau.
"It's just a little frustrating right now," he said. "I felt like I actually
hit the ball better than I have over the last two weeks.
"I came off the court not really thinking I did a whole lot wrong. The guy
was pretty much ripping winners from all angles."
