Henman Sets Up Federer Clash

In theory, being a sports fan is supposed to be enjoyable. Watching the very
best in the business perform to the peak of their potential is - allegedly -
a life enhancing experience. The thrills, the spills and the pure passion
that is the theatre of dreams. Well, not exactly. For the British sports fan,
life is never that simple.
Tim Henman reached the second round with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over
Robin Soderling to book a second round clash against champion Roger Federer,
but it was anything but plain sailing. Picking up where the England team left
off in the World Cup, Henman did what was expected of him but made us all
suffer while he did it.
The last time Henman faced Soderling it was 2003, heady days when Henman was
the darling of the crowd, when he was the very best that Britain had to offer
and one A. Murray Esq. was 16 year old hopeful honing his skills on the clay
courts of Barcelona.
Since then, life has changed a little as Henman is now Britain's number
three, he has not won a title since the Paris Masters at the end of that year
and Murray is now the apple of the home crowd's eye.
Back in 2003, Soderling was the latest talent to emerge from Sweden. The
Swedes, like the Brits, have been scouring the practice courts and tennis
clubs in search of someone to replace the Bjorn Borgs, the Stefan Edbergs and
the Mats Wilanders of their glorious past.
So far no-one capable of lifting the silverware at the major tournaments has
stepped forward but when Soderling came along, the Swedes perked up. When
they heard that he was tipped for success by no less than Borg himself, they
were impressed.
A rugged sort of chap with a belting serve and ferocious forehand, Soderling
may not have taken the world by storm but he has hauled himself up to number
37 in the world rankings, claimed two tournament titles in his six years on
the road and banked $1.3million in prize money. Even so, he should not have
been so much of a threat to Henman, the man who knows the All England Club
like the back of his hand and probably knows more about grass court tennis
than anyone else save Roger Federer.
Henman, though, has made a career out of giving people heart failure in SW19.
Spotting that Soderling has a forehand that flies like a heat-seeking
missile, he played as consistently as he could to the shot - and paid the
penalty. Pinned to the back of the court, he was trying to trade ground
strokes with a chap who seemed to be enjoying every second of the battle.
Then there was the business of Henman's errors. As the first set headed
towards the inevitable tie-break, he came up with some corkers. There was his
signature shot, the suicidal leave, as he conceded the first mini-break by
watching a lob fly over his head and land plumb on the baseline. And the
double fault that cost him the set after he had held, and dropped, three set
points. No wonder he looked dejected as he trudged back to his chair.
It took one hour and 24 minutes before anyone could break serve, but once
Henman had got his nose in front, it was like opening the flood gates. Henman
was in total control as the Swede could not shake the disappointment from his
head. For a set-and-a-half, Soderling was no more than a target for Henman to
take pot shots at and Britain's former darling was skipping to a
two-sets-to-one lead.
This, though, was a Henman match and, as such, was never going to be
straightforward. Soderling collected his ground strokes and arranged them
into a formidable strike force and before anyone could say "double fault" we
were into a fifth set.
At least Henman had seen this script before and knew that, with a little
application and a lot of determination, he could grab his place in the second
round. Sure enough, he was 3-0 up in no time flat and from there Soderling
could find no way back. Henman now has Federer to face in the next round
while the nation waits to endure England against Portugal on Saturday. It
ain't easy being a British sports fan.
