Henman Outclassed by Federer

Billed as the contest of this year's Championships, Roger Federer's meeting
with Tim Henman ended up a truly one-sided affair as the three-time champion
put on a tennis display that required just one hour 25 minutes to end the
Briton's latest tilt at Wimbledon in straight sets.
In the past 10 years, Henman has reached the semi-finals four times and is
one of the few players on the circuit to have a winning record against
Federer - six wins to four - but that was not enough to provide the kind of
encounter the crowds packed on to Henman Hill has hoped for, who saw their
hero escape with only six games to his credit in a 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 defeat.
The victory over Henman extended to 43 matches Federer's winning streak on
grass and on this form that record performance could well be extended to 48
at the end of the fortnight, with the 24-year-old Swiss landing his fourth
consecutive Wimbledon title to match the Open era mark of Bjorn Borg and Pete
Sampras.
Henman, of course, made a fight of it as best he could, opting to attack and
take his luck with the sort of serve-volley game he himself has admitted is
no longer the best strategy with slower courts and heavier balls.
A Federer service break in the third game of the opening set proved an early
setback for Henman's ambitions but he stuck to his attack plan and roused the
crowd when, trailing 4-3, he had two break points on the Federer delivery.
Federer averted the first one with one of his classic backhands arrowed
straight down the line past the incoming Henman, and the second opening was
lost on a Henman mishit which sailed yards out of court.
Federer needed no further urging to bear down hard and he wrapped up the
first set in 35 minutes with no more alarms. In fact, it was as if he had
been annoyed by the fright he had suffered, since he upped the pace
brilliantly in the second set to take it without the loss of a game, and at a
cost of a handful of points, in 20 minutes. Perhaps he was sending a message
to the rest of the players in the draw that he is undisputed king of this
particular jungle.
The early evening sun merely provided harsh illumination of Henman's
struggles in the third set as Federer stoked up the pressure even further,
the wonder of his angles and judgement of length bringing gasps from the
crowd and leaving his opponent flat-footed and disconsolate.
Every point won by Henman, and there were depressingly few of them, was
loudly cheered by his loyal supporters, but there was nothing the British
player could do to stem the force of the avalanche sweeping him through the
exit door.
Even opting to spend more time on the baseline swapping ground strokes did
not help, though after routinely losing nine successive games, Henman managed
to take Federer to a deuce game on the Swiss serve. But, like all the others
before it, that game also went the way of the champion to put him 4-0 ahead,
though Henman grittily held serve as Federer appeared to take his foot off
the accelerator, perhaps to make more of an occasion of it for the spectators.
But he was certainly not prepared to countenance something like a fourth set,
just a couple of games which helped to make the final score less brutal to
Henman to have to absorb and think about as he approaches his 32nd birthday
in September and the decision on how many more times he will return to
entertain his Wimbledon faithful.
