Mackin, 25, from Paisley, joined Murray in the first round of the Australian Open and Murray said the player was there "on merit". "I think, with the right guidance and the right people around him, he could be in the top 100," said Murray. "He just needs to learn to relax a little bit on the court. He can definitely be a much better player." Murray, who recently finished third in the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne after beating 2005 Australian Open champion Marat Safin 7-6 6-2, said Mackin had a bright future in the game. Alan doesn't often get completely out-classed because he plays so solid. Andy Murray Mackin beat the qualifying top seed Davide Sanguinetti in his opening match before ousting Alex Bogomolov Jr and Federico Luzzi. His 2-6 6-3 6-4 win over Luzzi secured him an opening match against Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti on Tuesday at Melbourne Park. "I think there're a lot of guys like that in Britain and it's just a matter of having the right people around you, believing in yourself and working hard - and I think he can definitely do it," Murray added of Mackin. "He doesn't often get completely out-classed because he plays so solid. "I think if he improved a few things he could be a good player." British Davis Cup captain John Lloyd was also delighted by Mackin's display, saying: "Alan really played with a lot of guts and determination.
