Murray slips to Cincinnati defeat
Andy Murray showed only glimpses of any form as he fell to a
straight-sets loss to Marcos Baghdatis in under an hour in round one of
the Cincinnati Masters.
The 20-year-old Scot, clearly still struggling after the wrist injury
that has limited him to three matches in three months, never looked
comfortable.
He held his first service game, but had no answer to Baghdatis's
ground strokes as the Cypriot won the next five.
And Baghdatis maintained the pressure to seal a simple 6-1 6-2 victory.
It was clear that a lack of fitness played its part, which will remain a
worry with the US Open two weeks away.

Murray exuded an air of negativity from the opening moments

And Murray conceded: "There's just a lot of things that I wasn't really doing
well - not moving fluidly, which is normally the one thing that I do really
well.
"I moved badly, so obviously wasn't hitting my forehand 100%. A combination
of those two things and also playing against a great player like Marcos
doesn't help."
However, Murray insisted his wrist was holding up well.
"I decided after my matches last week and then a few days before the
tournament here that I was going to try to hit some more (forehands) and, I
hoped, be pain free," he said.
"I haven't had any bad reactions. It was feeling better, and I guess it's
pretty much 100% now. It's a good sign."
And with the US Open starting on 27 August, Murray admitted: "Right now,
obviously it's not looking great.
I'm relieved to get through; he really took it to me
Lleyton Hewitt
"I want to try to play better in New Haven and then get some matches under my
belt before the US Open."
Elsewhere, defending champion Andy Roddick survived a tense first set to
beat Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-6 6-2 to reach the third round.
World number 35 Verdasco had two chances to break the American's serve
in the opening set but Roddick came through, winning the tie-break 7-3 and
then cruising through the second set.
Lleyton Hewitt struggled for just under three hours to edge past Swiss
Stanislas Wawrinka.
The Australian, a two-time finalist at this event, never looked
comfortable on serve, sending down eight double-faults, but won the first
with a break in game 11.
Wawrinka, number two in his country behind Roger Federer, hit back with a
clinical second set but Hewitt finally eked out a 7-5 3-6 7-6 win 7-5 in the
third-set tie-break.
"I'm relieved to get through," said the Australian. "He really took it to me.
"We both had a lot of chances in the first set, I can't really say there was
a turning point."
Ninth-seeded James Blake beat Colombian qualifier Alejandro Falla
7-6 (7-5) 6-1 and teenager Juan Martin del Potro defeated 15th seed Guillermo
Canas 6-2 6-2 in the first meeting between the Argentines.
Juan Monaco beat Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-7 (7-5) 6-3 and France's
Julien Benneteau beat Russian Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 3-6 6-3.
