Britain’s Greg Rusedski has set his sights on avenging a painful defeat to Pete Sampras at the BlackRock Masters Tennis rather than a return to the British Davis Cup team. 老魯準備復出打元老賽,想找上老山報仇 Rusedski today joined the 1997 Wimbledon finalist Cedric Pioline, French Davis Cup captain Guy Forget and former British No.1 Jeremy Bates in signing up to the eight-man field at the Royal Albert Hall, 2-7 December, but he does not intend to make a Davis Cup return. Sampras, Stefan Edberg, Goran Ivanisevic and John McEnroe complete the field at the BlackRock Masters Tennis, which is now in its 12th year. 預計參加的還有Pioline,Forget,Bates,Sampras,Edberg,Ivanisevic和Mcenroe Recent reports had suggested that Rusedski might be interested in returning to Great Britain’s Davis Cup team, which he represented for 13 years between 1995 and 2007. Those reports were subsequently denied by his spokesperson, and Rusedski confirmed today that his only playing plans were to compete at the Royal Albert Hall, rather than in Britain’s Davis Cup clash with Ukraine next year. 最近有報導指出Rusedski對回國家隊打台維斯杯有興趣 但老魯今天否認了 Rusedski reached the US Open final in 1997 and is keen to register only his second ever wins against Sampras and Ivanisevic, who both dominated him 9-1 during their professional playing careers. Rusedski曾經在97年打進美網決賽 此次將尋求對Sampras和Goran的第二勝 “I think I’ll stick with trying to win the BlackRock Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall in December,” said Rusedski, when asked about the Davis Cup reports. “The competition at the Royal Albert Hall is going to be tough enough as it is! Pete Sampras was one of the greatest, if not the greatest player to have played the sport. He won 14 Grand Slam titles and has kept himself in great shape. Stefan Edberg is also in fabulous shape, I practiced with him a lot when he lived in London and he plays a lot of squash. Both of those guys have won more than one Wimbledon and they will really make the competition tough at the BlackRock Masters Tennis this time. Pete was a guy that I only managed to beat once, but it would be great to beat him a second time, especially as this event is in London.” The last time Rusedski faced Sampras, the Briton endured a heart-breaking 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(3) 3-6 6-4 loss in the 3rd round of the US Open in 2002. Afterwards, in his post-match press conference, Rusedski caused a furore by suggesting that Sampras was ‘a step and a half slower’ than in previous years. Sampras went on to win the title. “I should have got 20% for motivating him, but I’m still waiting for my cheque!” joked Rusedski, when asked about his comments. “Look, I was disappointed about losing that match and sometimes you go into a press conference too quickly after a match and say things that you don’t mean or shouldn’t say. I did that and then watched him win the tournament. At the time, when I saw the difficult draw he had, I thought it would be tough for him to do that, but as the rest of the tournament went on, I had a sneaking feeling that he might go on and win it, and he did. It was an incredible achievement to win his 14th Grand Slam title and he’s a legend of the sport.” Rusedski will also be looking to win his second straight match against Ivanisevic, having lost all of their nine initial encounters. He earned numerous match points against the Croatian over the years, including during a record-equalling 20-18 tie-break at The Queen’s Club, but he didn’t take any of them until winning their final clash in Auckland in 2002. “No-one beats Greg Rusedski ten times in a row, not even Goran Ivanisevic!” said Rusedski, with his own take on the classic Vitas Gerulaitis quip. “Goran is a great personality and a great player and it didn’t seem to matter how many match points I had, I just couldn’t beat him. Maybe I can now! I came into the BlackRock Masters Tennis as an alternate last year and really enjoyed it. The Royal Albert Hall is a fabulous venue and it’s great to get back out there and play again because you really miss that buzz of competition and being out there in front of people. The BlackRock Masters Tennis allows you to enjoy that again, you can be competitive without going back on the main tour.” As well as the singles draw, a high-quality doubles field will also entertain the crowds at the Royal Albert Hall. Henri Leconte, Pat Cash, Mansour Bahrami, Peter Fleming, Tom Gullikson, Mikael Pernfors and Chris Wilkinson are all scheduled to appear. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.133.32.139
