The fourth seed suffered few scares against his unseeded opponent en route to sealing a 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory. The two traded breaks in the first set before Murray's class told as he won the second and third with ease. The Scot will now face Austrian Jurgen Melzer, seeded 31, in the third round on Saturday. "I felt like once I got ahead I could settle down," said Murray. "To come through in straight sets is obviously important. "It was a good test to have at this stage in the tournament." Asked about his tag as favourite for the title Murray replied, "There's a few other players that disagree with that a little bit. "But I've been playing well the last six or seven months. This is probably the best I've felt going into a Grand Slam. "I feel that with all the work I did in December and with great support here I can go far." With Rod Laver Arena still buzzing from the shock defeat of Venus Williams by Carla Suarez Navarro, Murray put on an authoritative display, hitting 37 winners and rarely looking in anything but complete control. An early sign of Murray's dominance came in the third game of the match as he broke Granollers, only for the Spaniard to deviate from the script by breaking back in the next game despite at one stage being 40-0 down. However, Murray reclaimed the initiative with a break in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead and then seeing the set out on serve. A double break in the second set courtesy of some fantastic serve-volleying put Murray firmly in charge and from then on the victory seemed a mere formality. He broke Granollers in the third and fifth game of the third set to wrap up a routine win. This is probably the best I've felt going into a Grand Slam Andy Murray Murray never quite hit the level to which many have become accustomed, but he did not really need to against an opponent who, despite the odd flash of power, is not in the same league as the world number four. Afterwards, the Scot denied he had been taking it easy and said the memory of his shock first-round loss to unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga last year was still on his mind. "I'm not in a position to feel I can cruise through matches in slams especially after last year," he told BBC Sport. "But once I got ahead in the first and managed to get a break ahead I started to settle down and pay better but he was tricky. "He's tricky to play against, because of the difference between his backhand which stays low and his forehand, which comes up quite a lot. "It was a bit tough to get my rhythm, but when I did, which I felt I did in the second set, I started to hit the ball much better." It may be that Murray was preserving his energy with one eye on the later rounds of a tournament that has at times been played at temperatures of 35C. After having his first round match cut short when Andrei Pavel retired hurt, Murray will be glad to have taken less than two hours to seal this win. His next match, against Melzer, is in two days' time. "I was two points away from losing to him in the US Open last year," said Murray. "He's a tough guy, a lefty with a big serve and he doesn't allow you to get much rhythm. I'll have to play well." Murray's elder brother Jamie was unable to match his younger sibling's success as he and American partner Eric Butorac headed out of the men's doubles in straight sets.
