The Grizzlies Report
By Robert Ducklo
for HOOPSWORLD.com
As the Grizzlies continue to amaze while they hold down the 6th spot in the
Western Conference (with the 9th best record in the NBA), here are some
random observations on the Grizzlies at the end of February:
- James Posey continues to stake his claim for team MVP. Over the past five
games, Posey has averaged 24.2 points on 53% shooting while picking up 7.8
rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He continues to be the
Grizzlies toughest player as seen in his recent performance against New Orleans
where a leg injury couldn’t stop him from scoring 24 points and getting 5
rebounds. Team insiders seem to be touting Posey for the Most Improved Player
Award. His numbers don’t justify it, but Posey’s contributions can’t be
underestimated.
- Pau Gasol has impressed with his toughness as well – his fractured nose
hasn’t kept him out of any games and he’s played with as much aggression
as could be expected out of a guy with a broken nose. His rebounding remains
a problem – especially on the defensive end - but he is playing through
pain (as he had throughout his career).
- It looks like Hubie took my advice and shortened the rotation as only 9
players saw action against New Orleans. Ok, he didn’t take my advice, but
I’m still glad that he shortened the rotation. Dahntay Jones may end up
being a decent pro, but his play had been spotty and the Griz couldn’t
afford to lose a shot at the playoff simply to maintain a 10 man rotation.
It looks like Jason Williams, Bonzi Wells, Posey, Gasol, Lorenzen Wright,
Shane Battier and (to a lesser extent) Stromile Swift will get the bulk of
the minutes while Bo Outlaw and Earl Watson will get limited time.
- Mike Miller is headed to LA to consult with Big Country Reeves’ back
doctor. Despite management’s assertions to the contrary, this looks serious.
Remember, they kept saying that Michael Dickerson was looking good until he
got re-injured. Then they said that his second injury was unrelated to his
initial injury until it was obvious that he wasn’t getting better.
I think that Miller will end up shutting it down for the season and this
off-season will be very important for him to see if he can play regularly in
the future.(Miller的傷是在魔術就有的還是?)
- The Grizzlies record by month:
- October 0-1
- November 7-7
- December 8-9
- January 10-4
- February 10-3
- Don’t look now, but Hubie Brown is just 7 games under .500 as the coach
of the Grizzlies. When you think about how the Grizzlies best season before
Hubie arrived was 18 games under .500, you get an idea of how big an
accomplishment this is.
- This is highly wrong of me to write… but the Grizzlies’ magic number
stands at 17.
- As the season enters its final months, here’s my guess on the 8 players
the Griz will protect in the expansion draft:
Pau Gasol
Shane Battier
Jason Williams
James Posey
Earl Watson
Lorenzen Wright
Bonzi Wells
Troy Bell
It’s a safe bet that Ryan Humphrey, Theron Smith and Bo Outlaw won’t be
protected. It wouldn’t do Charlotte much good to take Stromile Swift or
Jake Tsakalidis since that would just make them unrestricted free agents and
they could sign with any team. Mike Miller’s injury and long-term contract
make him an unlikely choice for the Bobcat. That leaves rookies Jones and
Bell. And really, who knows which of those management is more excited about.
