But the Grizzlies' starting point guard purposely didn't attend the team's practice, and Thursday Williams paid a significant price for the unexcused day off. Williams, who participated in the morning shootaround, was removed from the starting lineup for Thursday night's game against the Seattle Sonics. Backup point Earl Watson started and Williams played off the bench. "There has been additional discipline that has been applied," coach Hubie Brown said. "But it's an internal thing, and it's going to stay that way." Williams also was fined an undisclosed - presumably large - sum for breaking one of only four team rules that Brown strictly enforces. Williams refused comment as he left the morning workout. It is conceivable that Williams staged a one-day boycott, stemming from his displeasure over occasionally being benched late in games. He sat out the last 14 minutes of Tuesday's 82-79 victory over Philadelphia when Brown decided to use Watson's defense against Sixers star Allen Iverson. During the past two months, Brown routinely has used Watson to close out physical games where solid defense is also needed to combat the opposing team's backcourt quickness. But this was the first time Williams had missed a practice without notifying the team. Williams is in his sixth NBA season and third with the Grizzlies, who are about to complete their first winning campaign and first playoff run. Brown said he didn't expect the situation with Williams to linger. "This is an individual action. This is not a team action. The team reacts," Brown said. "In a situation like this, everyone has choices in life. Sometimes you make the right decisions. Sometimes you make the wrong decisions. But if you make a wrong decision, then there has to be a consequence. That's how we've always coached. That's how we will (coach) until we hang them up for real." This isn't the first time Brown has been confronted with an uncomfortable situation regarding a Grizzly point guard. Brown has often referred to the position as the most difficult in basketball. Those who play the point apparently are apt to be more temperamental, too. After a Dec. 29 game at Indiana, Watson complained about how he was being used. Watson and the Griz recovered from the verbal outburst and a seven-game losing streak to become one of the league's hottest teams since Jan. 1. "There's never a good time for a distraction, whether it's in training camp or in the course of a season," Brown said. "The main thing is that it has to be a learning experience. And it's also that no player here is ever bigger than the team. Maybe some other places it might be that way. But not here." - Ronald Tillery: 529-2353 -- ╭──── Origin:<不良牛牧場> bbs.badcow.com.tw (210.200.247.200)─────╮ Welcome to SimFarm BBS -- From : [218.173.120.67] ◣◣◢ ◢◢不良牛免費撥接→電話:40586000→帳號:zoo→密碼:zoo ◣◣─╯ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.173.120.139
