Jerry West Named as 2003-04 NBA Executive of the Year by Sports Illustrated
Memphis, Tennessee, April 23, 2004 — Memphis Grizzlies President of
Basketball Operations Jerry West was named as 2003-04 NBA Executive of the Year
by Sports Illustrated, the magazine announced in their issue dated April 26
arriving on newsstands now.
Sports Illustrated selected West among the six award recipients named by the
magazine, which includes MVP (Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett), Rookie of the Year
(Denvers Carmelo Anthony), Defensive Player (Detroit’s Ben Wallace), Sixth
Man (San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili), Most Improved (Portland’s Zach Randolph),
and Coach (Utah’s Jerry Sloan). The publication also announced the 15 players
chosen as SI's All-NBA Teams. Last season, Grizzlies point guard Jason Williams
was selected as SI’s 2002-03 Most Improved Player.
West was honored for the first time in his career as NBA Executive of the Year
by the league after the 1994-95 season when he served as Executive Vice
President for the Los Angeles Lakers. In the current issue, SI noted the
rationale in selecting West as their league’s top executive for this season.
“By signing free-agent forward James Posey and then trading for guard Bonzi
Wells in December, he helped turn a feckless franchise into the conference’s
No. 6 seed. In this era of disposable coaches West also backed up (Grizzlies
Head Coach Hubie) Brown’s use of a 10-man rotation to exploit the league’s
deepest roster. If only other NBA executives offer such firm support,” wrote
SI’s NBA writer Ian Thomsen in the magazine’s annual awards review of the NBA
season.
The Grizzlies organization began a new era of prosperity when West was
introduced as the team’s President of Basketball Operations on April 30, 2002.
Returning from retirement as the Los Angeles Lakers Executive Vice President of
Basketball Operations, he has guided the Grizzlies to acquire the 2003-04 NBA
Coach of the Year, Hubie Brown, and upgraded a team roster with nine new
players in the past two seasons. In less than two years with West at the helm,
Memphis has already risen to achieve a 50-32 record this season. It’s the
franchise’first winning record and first playoff berth as the sixth seed in
the West.
Coach Brown adds “He’s a man of courageous decisions, because he has the
total picture in focus. When you look back to Nov. 12, 2003 (Grizzlies were
0-8, and West hired Brown as coach), He brought in nine new players, stayed
with the youth plan as the third youngest team in the league, and every new
player fit our style of play perfectly while staying within the budget. Jerry
is a hard worker who puts in exhausting hours. He has the ability to
communicate and sees the total picture, and everyone respects his presence.”
