Hanging with ... Bo Outlaw
Being the team's elder statesman is: "Nothing really. I haven't even thought
about it. We've got a bunch of good guys and they don't treat me like the old
man."
My car radio is tuned to:"107.1 FM. I've been listening to that station since
I got here."
The NBA needs: "More diverse marketing. Every commercial you see it's the same
people. Spread it out. Divide the commercials. Let Pau Gasol be in one. Don't
show LeBron James everyday. Let somebody else get a turn."
Between the lines
Injuries haven't allowed many training camp battles to unfold. But one could be
developing between Lorenzen Wright and Jake Tsakalidis at center.
Wright is the incumbent starter from the end of last season. "I'm just trying
to see how it's going to go. When preseason starts, I'll know," Wright said.
"I'm just working. Hubie's been working us real hard trying to get us in shape,
so I'm just looking forward to a good season."
Tsakalidis is forsaking pain in his sprained ankle to participate in most
drills. He's expecting more of an opportunity to play than he was given last
season.
"It's up to you based on how hard you work," Tsakalidis said. "If you work hard
and prove yourself you'll play."
In addition to listening to Brown and watching how he prepares players, fans
attending today's open practice from 3-5 p.m. at FedExForum may enjoy autograph
sessions with the players and giveaways.
Single-game tickets go on sale today beginning at 2 p.m. at FedExForum. All 41
regular-season home games will be available, and may be purchased at all
Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-4-NBA-TIX, or online at grizzlies.com.
Single-game tickets start at $12 per game.
High flier
Jason Williams is receiving high praise from the coaching staff for his
shooting and conditioning. The veteran point guard also has shown solid
leadership with younger players and is working to improve placement on his
passes.
Coach's corner
Cautious may be the word to use to describe Saturday's workout. The barrage of
injuries forced the Griz to cancel a planned scrimmage. The team also canceled
its night practice, effectively ending two-a-day sessions.
Injury update
Add James Posey (sprained left foot) to the list of walking wounded. The
Grizzlies are waiting for result of an MRI exam on Posey's foot. Bonzi Wells
(strained left hamstring) and Shane Battier (strained left hamstring) were
limited. Rookie Antonio Burks (left hip flexor) and Ryan Humphrey (left foot
sprain) again sat out of the morning session.
He said it
"I knew coming in it was going to be difficult from the standpoint that I'm the
new guy. Everybody else knows the calls, knows where to set picks and knows
the angles. But everybody's been fantastic breaking things down." – forward
Brian Cardinal, on learning a new system.
