[Recap] Grizzlies Grab Win From Magic
ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 12 (Ticker) --
Mike Miller returned and spoiled the home debut of the new-look Orlando Magic.
Miller scored six of his nine points in the fourth quarter as the Memphis
Grizzlies held on for a 99-95 victory over the Orlando Magic, who got 16
minutes from Grant Hill.
After Hedo Turkoglu's 3-pointer with 3:54 remaining gave the Magic a 93-88 lead
, the Grizzlies responded with an 11-2 run to close the game.
Jake Tsakalidis hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 93-92 with 3:11
to play and Miller added a layup just 33 seconds later to give the Grizzlies
the lead for good.
A former member of the Magic, Miller added a free throw with 2:08 left before
Brian Cardinal hit four consecutive free throws to cap the win.
Hill, who is attempting to return from a fourth surgery on his left ankle,
scored two points. After playing just 47 games in the previous three seasons,
Hill had a pair of free throws and was 0-of-4 from the floor.
A handful of players made their Magic debut in the loss. Steve Francis,
acquired with Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato as part of an offseason trade that
sent All-Star Tracy McGrady to the Houston Rockets, had 19 points, seven
rebounds and seven assists.
Mobley scored 24 points, including three 3-pointers. Turkoglu, signed as a free
agent in the offseason, chipped in 15.
Forward Dwight Howard, selected first overall in the 2004 draft, was impressive
in his debut. The 18-year-old rookie scored 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting but
showed inexperience in the fourth quarter, missing four consecutive free throws
with the Magic clinging to an 88-86 lead. Stromile Swift scored 16 points in
just 13 minutes and Pau Gasol had 12 and 10 boards for Memphis.
