Fratello's top-notch, Celtics' Rivers says
December 5, 2004
No doubt that Celtics coach Doc Rivers was glad to see the Grizzlies hire
Mike Fratello on Thursday since Rivers played for Fratello.
"Mike coached me for seven years (in Atlanta)," Rivers said, "and he's an
excellent coach, a great defensive coach. I mean, a great defensive coach.
I do think he gets too much heat about the offense. We averaged 103 points
a game with the Hawks and were one of the top five or six scoring teams
because of Mike Fratello. He went to Cleveland and had to play slowdown
and now he's like the father of the slowdown game. I don't know how he got
that title."
Rivers used Fratello as an example this past week when the Celtics coach
got in a shouting match with Celtics forward Paul Pierce before sitting
him on the bench briefly in a game Wednesday against the Bucks.
In explaining his action, Rivers said it wasn't personal. He added that if
anybody could have heard the infighting between Dominique Wilkins and
Fratello on the Hawks' bench in the '80s, they'd have been shocked.
