Bulls Surge Past Grizzlies
MEMPHIS, Tenn., Dec. 15 (Ticker) -- Ben Gordon and Andres Nocioni didn't play
like rookies when it mattered most.
Gordon scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and Nocioni also came
up big in the final period as the Chicago Bulls posted a 96-88 victory over the
Memphis Grizzlies.
The third pick in June's draft, Gordon is averaging 20 points in his last three
games. He went 5-of-9 from the field in this one.
"It feels good to contribute," Gordon said. "I feels good, especially when it
counts in the fourth quarter. That's something I have to continue to do."
A versatile 6-7 forward who helped lead Argentina to the gold medal at the
Athens Olympics, Nocioni scored six points in a decisive 16-4 run that the gave
the Bulls an 87-76 lead with 6:13 remaining.
"When we went small there late, (Nocioni) played some big minutes for us,"
Gordon said.
Eddy Curry scored 20 points, Kirk Hinrich added 15 and Tyson Chandler had 10
rebounds for the Bulls, who are 5-6 since losing their first nine games. They
also won on the road for just the second time in 10 tries
Bulls coach Scott Skiles was ejected with 4:13 left in the second quarter after
picking up two technical fouls.
Trailing by 12 points at the time of Skiles' ejection, the Bulls gathered some
momentum from losing their coach by closing the half with an 11-2 surge,
pulling within 48-44.
Pau Gasol scored 24 points - just two in the fourth quarter - for the Grizzlies
, who lost for the third time in four games. The forward scored just one point
in the fourth quarter in Monday's 92-86 loss to Cleveland.
"It's all about respect," said Gasol, who went 9-of-14 from the field before
disappearing late. "When teams see you play the way we did in the second half,
they lose respect for you, and they come at you a lot harder."
Mike Miller added 12 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 45 percent (31-of-69)
and committed 16 turnovers.
"I think we lost track of what we set out to do," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello
said. "We did not convert tonight, we missed dunks and we had careless
turnovers. It was definitely agony to watch."
