Teams began buying out contracts of several players after the trade deadline, and the Griz have a potential free-agent in mind: power forward Leon Powe. Cleveland reached a buyout agreement with Powe and he'll clear waivers Tuesday. There will be competition for the 6-8 reserve because his former team, Boston, and New York have expressed interest. Powe's agent, Aaron Goodwin, confirmed Memphis is one of the teams his client would seriously consider. If the Griz are successful in luring Powe, then Rodney Carney would depart after his 10-day contract ends Wednesday. The Griz are interested in Powe for two reasons. The organization has stated it will do whatever it takes to improve its playoff chances. Plus, Griz general manager Chris Wallace (a former Boston executive) seems most comfortable with adding former Celtics to achieve that goal. Powe was a member of the Celtics' 2008 championship team. He has played in just 14 games this season but says his surgically repaired knees are no longer troubling him. "When you have a chance to get a new start during the season after you lost all those games, you always want to go to a playoff team to help them better themselves," Powe told Yahoo! Sports. "I could see myself back over there in Boston. I could see myself in a number of places though. I'm just trying to find a good fit with a playoff team. The team I was on, we were losing all kinds of games. I'm tired of losing."
