[外電] Kuo is in the middle of a fantastic year

Hiroki Kuroda picked up his eighth win of the season by going eight innings
and allowing only five hits and a walk. With Jonathan Broxton unavailable,
Hong-Chih Kuo came into the 2-0 game in the ninth and shut the door for his
third save of the season. Kuo is in the middle of a fantastic year and
deserves to be owned, even though saves will come few and far between.

Hong-Chih Kuo, who warmed up for the third straight game -- a rarity for him
-- pitched the ninth inning for his third save of the season, on a night of
rest for Jonathan Broxton. It appears any kid gloves that were used on Kuo
are now a thing of the past.
Kuo at home this season has pitched 16 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just
four hits and three walks, with 14 strikeouts. Left-handed batters this
season have no hits in 33 at-bats against Kuo, with 17 strikeouts (they also
have three walks and a sacrifice fly). Rookie Ike Davis, whom Vin Scully said
was "a lamb to slaughter" against Kuo, was the only lefty to face Kuo
tonight. He struck out, naturally.

Manuel had one other pinch-hitting opportunity, in the ninth. With closer
Jonathan Broxton unavailable, the Dodgers turned to their other All-Star
reliever, Hong Chih-Kuo, who had yet to allow a hit to a left-hander in 32
at-bats this season. Half of those at-bats ended in a strikeout.
Kuo walked David Wright, who was 1-for-3, on four pitches with one out. That
brought up left-hander Ike Davis, who has hit lefties better this season but
is in a 1-for-17 slump the last four games. He struck out swinging on four
pitches, and a Francoeur groundout ended the game.
"I think Ike has a better chance against a power guy like that than he does
against the flip-ems, those types of things," Manuel said.

Kuo came in with the lowest career ERA against the Mets (0.35) of any active
major league pitcher, according to ESPN Stats and Information. The All-Star
left-hander shaved that figure a little closer (0.33) by blowing through the
top of the order fairly easily in the ninth, recording his third save of the
season.
Kuo began by striking out Angel Pagan. Although he then walked David Wright
on four pitches, that brought up left-handed-hitting Ike Davis. Kuo threw him
four consecutive fastballs, getting ahead 1-2, then dropped a slider on
Davis, who swung and missed, leaving left-handed hitters a combined 0 for 32
with 17 strikeouts against Kuo this season.
Although Francoeur fouled off a couple of two-strike pitches, he eventually
grounded to third, ending the game.
All the while, Broxton, the Dodgers' All-Star closer who has struggled in his
past two appearances but hadn't pitched since Tuesday, was nowhere to be
found.
"Broxton was sick," Torre said. "We thought when he got to the ballpark that
something he ate last night just didn't agree with him. We thought he would
be all right for the game, but it never got any better, so we sent him home.
Hopefully, he'll be all right tomorrow."
Torre didn't reveal that to the media before the game, presumably because he
didn't want to tip off the Mets.
Torre said despite Kuo's season-long dominance and Broxton's recent
struggles, he isn't in any way tempted to flip his eighth-inning setup man
and his closer.
"No, I like having the tandem we have right now," Torre said.
