TOKYO - Daniela Hantuchova outlasted Australia's Alicia Molik on Tuesday to
advance at the Pan Pacific Open.
Hantuchova,seeded eighth, defeated Molik 6-1, 6-7 (7), 7-5 in their first-round
match at Tokyo's Metropolitan Gymnasium.
"It was very important for me to beat her," said Hantuchova, who lost to Molik
in the second round of the Australian Open.
"It's the third time we've played in a month and it was becoming a nightmare
for me."
Lisa Raymond,who upset Venus Williams at the Australian Open,lost to Bulgaria's
Magdalena Maleeva 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. American Laura Granville defeated Russia's
Alina Jidkova 7-5, 6-2.
Japan's Saori Obata defeated Julia Vakulenko of Ukraine 7-5, 6-3. Obata will
face the top-seeded Williams in the second round.
Williams and defending champion Lindsay Davenport both had first round byes.
After cruising though the first set, Hantuchova was up 4-1 in the second set
before Molik rallied to go up 6-5.
Hantuchova held serve to make it 6-6 and send the set to a tiebreaker, which
Molik won 9-7.
"I was in control and then fell apart in the second set," Hantuchova said.
"I was able to come back and pull it out and the difference this time was
attitude and confidence. I really believed I could beat her and it paid off."
In the final set, Hantuchova took advantage of unforced errors by Molik and
broke serve in the final game to win the match in 2 hours and 5 minutes.
In other matches, Russia's Tatiana Panova was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over China's
Jie Zheng, while Russian Maria Sharapova downed Japan's Yuka Yoshida 6-1, 6-1.
