Sluggish Start Doesn't Slow Hantuchova
WARSAW, Poland - Despite a sluggish start that saw her drop the first four
games of the match and eventually the first set, Daniela Hantuchova came out
victorious on Tuesday during first round action at the J & S Cup in Warsaw,
defeating Spanish player Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, 67(3) 63 63.
The 20-year-old from the Slovak Republic is making her second straight
appearance in Warsaw and hoping to kickstart what has been a dismal start to
the year. Hantuchova is only 5-5 on the season, winning back-to-back matches
just once this year (Tokyo - Pan Pacific). She will next face No.8 seed Anna
Smashnova-Pistolesi, who had a little easier time in her 63 62 victory
against Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian of Switzerland.
Polish wildcard Marta Domachowska won her first match in three tries in Warsaw,
defeating American qualifier Kristen Schlukebir, 64 60. Domachowska, was had
been unsuccessful in two previous wildcard appearances at the event, was
excited to pick up her first WTA Tour victory in her native country.
"I was a little nervous at the warm up but after a few balls I felt much
better and I kept playing better as the match went on," Domachowska said.
"It's my first win in such a big tournament which I am very proud of. I think
I still need more patience in my tennis but my tactics worked out well today."
Domachowska wasn't the only wildcard to come out on the winning end, as
Russia's Vera Douchevina also scored a straight sets victory, defeating
qualifier Kveta Peschke, 75 62. Douchevina's countrywoman, Elena Bovina, was
also victorious, but needed three sets to defeat Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik,
46 63 61.
